MoMath January – February 2024 Upcoming Events

Dear MoMath friends,

It’s a mathemagical end to 2023, with MoMath’s engaging mini-camps closing out the year.  Then, 2024 kicks off with a blast as applications open January 1 for a variety of programs for educators (the Rosenthal Prize and Rosenthal Prize Institute), for students (MoMath’s 2024 summer camp), and for math graduates (the 2024-2025 Exponent Fellowship).  Winter is also a great time to learn a new craft from the comfort of your home with online topological crochet, to visit the Antiprisms origami fashion exhibit before it closes in February, to join a friendly competition with the game of SET, and to unravel a musical mystery with math at January’s Math Encounters.  It’s a winter
wonderland of math, only at MoMath!

Extensions: “Number Theory” — an online program for gifted math students in grades 6–12

Primes are gaps in the number line — the numbers that aren’t multiples of other numbers.  Yet they are distributed by a mysterious law: among numbers with n digits, about one in 2.3n is prime.  We’ll explore some of the basic facts of number theory, such as Fermat’s Little Theorem (used in cryptography) and the Prime Number Theorem (just mentioned).  Put on your thinking cap and join Chaim Goodman-Strauss online for a two-session minicourse designed to engage and challenge the brightest minds from around the country in grades six through twelve.  Chaim is MoMath’s Outreach Mathematician and one of the four researchers who most recently discovered two mathematical breakthroughs: the Hat

In January, meet mathematician Maria Klawe.  Maria Klawe obtained her Ph.D. in mathematics in 1977 from the University of Alberta; she switched soon afterward to Computer Science, then still a fledgling academic field (not yet the juggernaut we know today).  From 2005 to last summer, she was the fifth President of Harvey Mudd College, which during her tenure became one of the most diverse four-year universities in the United States.  Maria recently moved to New York City, where she has just taken over the helm of Math for America.  Register at momath.org/meetmath.

Extensions: “Number Theory” — an online program for gifted math students in grades 6–12

Primes are gaps in the number line — the numbers that aren’t multiples of other numbers.  Yet they are distributed by a mysterious law: among numbers with n digits, about one in 2.3n is prime.  We’ll explore some of the basic facts of number theory, such as Fermat’s Little Theorem (used in cryptography) and the Prime Number Theorem (just mentioned).  Put on your thinking cap and join Chaim Goodman-Strauss online for a two-session minicourse designed to engage and challenge the brightest minds from around the country in grades six through twelve.  Chaim is MoMath’s Outreach Mathematician and one of the four researchers who most recently discovered two mathematical breakthroughs: the Hat
