MoMath July – August 2023 Upcoming Events

Dear MoMath friends,

There’s a lot to juggle (literally!) at MoMath this summer, including workshops, talks, and demos on the math of juggling.  Fascinating conversations are also on tap, from a discussion with Po-Shen Loh about how to save the next generation from ChatGPT, to an inspiring real life story of how mathematics saved one young woman’s life.  Presenters join us from around the world, including math expositor, TikTok phenom, and mathematical artist Ayliean MacDonald from Scotland, the high-energy, wild-and-crazy Steve Sherman from South Africa, and mathematicians Shaula Fiorelli and Elise Raphael from Switzerland, talking about magic squares and unsolved math mysteries.  Feeling artsy?  Join us for MoMath’s
PRIDE event celebrating Frida 100 Years, and meet the artist behind Pi and Other Delights, David Reimann.  Prefer a day of fun in the sun?  Don’t miss the NYC Math Festival, an outdoor celebration of the wonders of math.  With weekly summer camp programs, the three-day MOVES conference, a children’s book club, and much, much more, MoMath has you covered for a delightful summer of math.

The Museum is open from 10 am to 5 pm, seven days a week, 364 days a year.  The Museum occasionally closes early for events; please check visit.momath.org for more information.

Retail Pick-of-the-Month: Tantrix Discovery
Tantrix Discovery is a challenging pattern-matching puzzle.  Your aim is to build loops of various shapes and sizes starting with just three tiles.  Each new tile you add gives you a different and more challenging puzzle.  You may not find the first loop hard… but only the best can solve all ten!  This puzzle keeps on going no matter how many additional packs of ten tiles are added into play.

Free!  Family Fridays: “Magic Squares” (in person)
Friday, August 4 at 6:30 pm ET
Join Shaula Fiorelli and learn how to build a magic square whose sum is given by the visiting audience in less than a minute.  A magic square is a square array of numbers, usually positive integers, where the sums of the numbers in each row, each column, and both main diagonals are the same.  In this workshop, we will discover how to do it using Leonhard Euler’s technique with pieces of different sizes and colors to be placed on a grid, respecting certain rules, and then the magic will appear!  Thanks to the generous support of Two Sigma, this program is free to attendees.  Register at familyfridays.momath.org.
