Dear MoMath friends,

It’s time for Mathemagic at MoMath!  Don’t miss the return of crowd-favorite Art Benjamin, who will excite and delight you with amazing feats of mental math.  Then, jump into June with Matt Parker, one of the funniest math people around and the author of a book about what happens when math goes wrong in the real world — but this time, Matt will be hosting the engineers and designers of a project where the math went very right, the award-winning Cody Dock Rolling Bridge.  Math lovers of all ages can channel their inner child and attend a delightful hour of puppetry and mathematics, history buffs can learn how finance was critical in the development of mathematics, and creative math is on tap with expert
origami artist Paul Jackson.  Is action more your style?  Don’t miss a robotics demo; a chance to meet computer graphics artist John Schlage (Jurassic Park, Terminator 2, and Star Trek: Generations); and the return of the New York City Math Festival.  And that’s not all: a new reading club for kids, a minicourse on linear art, and a new show featuring the mathematical art of David Reimann help ensure that it will be a sizzling summer at MoMath!

Transformations 2023, the summer camp at MoMath — registration is open!
MoMath’s popular summer program is now accepting registrations for summer 2023.  Students will experience the richness of mathematics with America’s only museum dedicated to math.  Through interactive education sessions, creative projects, and supervised independent activities, math will come alive for each and every participant.  Transformations offers a mixed-ages, small-group approach: the Epsilons level for rising first through third graders focuses on helping students cultivate a love for mathematics; the Deltas level for rising fourth through sixth graders allows campers to fully explore their mathematical interests; and the Gammas level for rising seventh through ninth

Propose an abstract or activity for the MOVES 2023 Conference
(Deadline: Wednesday, May 31)
Join MoMath in New York City for its sixth conference on the Mathematics of Various Entertaining Subjects.  The MOVES Conference will feature dozens of talks on current research in recreational mathematics, as well as a wide variety of family-accessible mathematical activities.  This year’s conference, “Threads Through Mathematics,” will highlight math in the fiber arts and keynote speakers will include: Ingrid Daubechies, Sabetta Matsumoto, Érika Roldán, and Chaim Goodman-Strauss.  To submit a proposal or to register, visit moves.momath.org.

2023 Rosenthal Prize for Innovation and Inspiration in Math Teaching

2023 Rosenthal Prize Summer Institute
(Deadline: Monday, May 15)
Educators, want to combine a free trip to NYC with an opportunity to inspire young minds?  Apply for the Rosenthal Prize Summer Institute this summer, and ramp up your ability to excite and delight your students!  MoMath will welcome a cohort of educators to New York City (expenses paid) for a unique professional development opportunity, Thursday, July 13 through Saturday, July 15.  Educators will take an in-depth look at the mathematical content and pedagogy of Rosenthal Prize lessons, learn how the lessons connect to national standards for math education, develop plans to implement these lessons in their local schools, come up with ideas for new lessons inspired by the goals of the Rosenthal Prize, learn new ways to promote
mathematics learning in schools and communities, experience the wonders of the Museum, and see what goes into making interactive math exhibits and programs.  The submission window closes Monday, May 15.  If selected, you will be notified by June 1.  To learn more and apply for the Rosenthal Prize Summer Institute, visit rosenthalinstitute.momath.org.

Integrators: The MoMath High School Volunteer Program (in person)
MoMath accepts a limited number of high school students for ongoing volunteer roles during summer vacation and/or the academic year.  The Integrators program offers a unique chance to improve interpersonal and communication skills, explore mathematical concepts, and learn valuable job skills.  MoMath Integrators interact with visitors (on the Museum floor or online) and train with professional educators, interpreters, and managers.  Students who participate during summer vacation commit five days per week, while school-year participants commit approximately one day per week, typically a Saturday or Sunday, from September through June.  Apply now for Summer 2023 at volunteers.momath.org.

Expansions: an afternoon enrichment program for gifted math students (in person)
Reinvent math class with Expansions, MoMath’s afternoon gifted program.  Featuring programs for math-loving students enrolled in first through eighth grades, Expansions workshops are designed and delivered by MoMath’s educational team to illuminate the wonders of mathematics, challenge and inspire students, and broaden their mathematical horizons.  With topics ranging from fractals to cellular automata, these afternoon classes provide an opportunity for participants to learn advanced and fascinating topics not included in the standard K–12 curriculum.  Plus, students can benefit from enjoying math together in small groups of talented and focused young scholars.  To learn more and apply for

MoMath’s free outreach programs for Title I schools include in-person and online field trips to the Museum, workshops presented by experienced MoMath educators in your classroom, and visits to your school by Math Midway 2 Go (MM2GO), MoMath’s travelling suite of original mathematical exhibits.  Support for these programs is now available, thanks to contributions from individuals and organizations including: Judith Gibbons and Francesco Scattone, Con Edison, The Scripps Family Fund for Education and the Arts, Two Sigma, the Hearst Foundations, the Manhattan Community Awards Program (MCAP), and New York City Council Members Carlina Rivera (Council District 2) and Mercedes Narcisse (Council District 46).  These
