[MoMath] 2014 Feb-Mar Upcoming Events

Dear MoMath friends,

The cold days of winter are upon us, but things are heating up at MoMath. With programs for students, seniors, and toddlers, a March Madness event, and even a new adult-only night, there's something for everyone at MoMath!

PolyPals:  Bring your toddlers and preschoolers to MoMath for afternoon fun!
Tuesday afternoons, Jan. 28, Feb. 4, 11, 12
PolyPals, MoMath's program for pre-K children, has taken off in 2014.  Meeting every Tuesday for four weeks, PolyPals offers our littlest potential mathematicians the opportunity to listen to math-themed stories and have fun exploring the concepts behind them.  Led by MoMath's skilled educational staff, toddlers and pre-schoolers will participate in songs, stories, and activities tied to a different theme each week.  Patterns, shapes, numbers, and more—PolyPals is a great way to enrich your child's day with mathematical inspiration. It's not too late to sign up: registration is $20 per meeting.  For further information and to register, visit polypals.momath.org. Registration for new sessions will open soon.

Expansions:  MoMath’s new program to engage and challenge NYC’s brightest math students
Tuesday afternoons, Jan. 28, Feb. 4, 11, 12 (HS students)
Thursday afternoons, Jan. 23, 30, Feb. 6, 13 (K-8, separated by level)

January saw the launch of MoMath's after-school gifted program, Expansions.  Featuring programs for all mathematically gifted students currently enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade, the Expansions workshops are designed and delivered by MoMath's educational team to challenge and inspire students, and broaden their mathematical horizons. With topics ranging from fractals to cellular automata, these afternoon sessions will provide an opportunity for participants to learn advanced and fascinating topics not included in the standard K-12 curriculum.  Plus, your child can benefit from enjoying math together with small groups of talented and focused young scholars.

Expansions offers sessions at five levels, which are differentiated by mathematical experience rather than age; entry is by application only. It's not too late to sign up: tuition is $70 per session.  For more information, or to request an application, email expansions@momath.org. Registration for new sessions will open soon.

Senior citizen days at MoMath!
Every Monday from January 6 through March 31

MoMath is partnering with SD26 to enliven dreary winter afternoons.  From January through March, every Monday is funday for seniors at MoMath.  Start your afternoon with a special lunch deal at SD26, one of the premiere eateries in the neighborhood, then spend the afternoon engaging your brain with exploration of MoMath’s over thirty innovative exhibits.  Buy one, get one:  buy a MoMath admission ticket and bring a friend in for free!  For further information, email seniors@momath.org.

Math Encounters:  Patterns and Disorder — How Random Can Random Be?
Wednesday, February 5, 4:00 pm or 7:00 pm
If a set of numbers is large, does it have to contain any patterns? Just how large does a set need to be, to contain interesting configurations? Do specific sets of integers, such as the primes, contain hidden patterns? Come explore all this and more with mathematician Bryna Kra, as she discusses the difference between structure and randomness.

Family Friday:  Scrabble with Friends — Strategies and Skills from the Pro
Friday, February 7, 6:30 pm
Back by popular demand, three-time national champion Joe Edley returns to MoMath for another evening of Scrabble fun.  This time, Joe will teach strategy and word-finding skills through actual game play, one rack at a time.  Don’t forget to bring your Scrabble board!

MoMath at the Intrepid
Saturday, February 15, and Sunday, February 16

MoMath Masters
Tribeca Rooftop on Tuesday, February 25, 6 pm
Don't miss out on this fun-filled night of good food, good drink, suspense, excitement, and (of course) math.  From the entertaining cocktail round right through to the challenging finals, come see why the NY Times compared the Masters to the Super Bowl, describing the finals round as having the "same thrills, tension, [and] quick thinking under pressure…as a true sports event does." Will Shortz joins us again to host this fun-filled evening. For more information and to register, visit masters.momath.org.

Math Encounters:  Modeling the Melt
Wednesday, March 5, 4:00 pm or 7:00 pm
The precipitous loss of Arctic sea ice has far outpaced expert predictions. Come along with Ken Golden, the Indiana Jones of mathematics, as he explores the mathematical underpinnings of this mystery and takes us (via video) on an Antarctic expedition.
