Come to Volumes on December 15 as we join Amir Aczel in an adventure-filled saga to find the original source of our numerals.  In Finding Zero, we follow Aczel’s quest doggedly crisscrossing the ancient world, scouring dusty, moldy texts, cross-examining so-called scholars who offer wildly differing sets of facts, and ultimately penetrating deep into a Cambodian jungle.  While on this odyssey, Aczel meets a host of fascinating characters: academics in search of truth, jungle trekkers looking for adventure, surprisingly honest politicians, shameless smugglers, and treacherous archaeological thieves―who finally reveal where our numbers come from.  Along the way, we enrich our knowledge and experience of math, philosophy, religion, and the human condition.  Learn more and register at volumes.momath.org.

Volumes, the MoMath book club: A Doubter’s Almanac by Ethan Canin
Thursday, January 19, 6:00 pm
Come to Volumes on January 19 to discuss Ethan Canin's A Doubter's Almanac.  Milo Andret is born with an unusual mind.  A lonely child growing up in the woods of northern Michigan in the 1950s, he gives little thought to his own talent.  But with his acceptance at U.C. Berkeley he realizes the extent, and the risks, of his singular gifts.  California in the '70s is a seduction, opening Milo’s eyes to the allure of both ambition and indulgence.  The research he begins there will make him a legend; the woman he meets there—and the rival he meets alongside her—will haunt him for the rest of his life, for Milo’s brilliance is entwined with a dark need that soon grows to threaten his work, his family, even his existence.  Learn more and register at volumes.momath.org.

Tween Primes, the MoMath book club for tweens and teens: The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster
Friday, January 20, 4:30 pm
MoMath brings its popular Volumes book club back once again for its younger audience.  For Milo, everything’s a bore.  When a tollbooth mysteriously appears in his room, he drives through only because he’s got nothing better to do.  But on the other side, things seem different.  Milo visits the Island of Conclusions (you get there by jumping), learns about time from a ticking watchdog named Tock, and even embarks on a quest to rescue Rhyme and Reason!  Somewhere along the way, Milo realizes something astonishing.  Life is far from dull.  In fact, it’s exciting beyond his wildest dreams…  Pizza, ice cream, and good math reads: what better way to spend an evening?  Learn more and register at tweenprimes.momath.org.

Friday, January 27, 6:30 pm
