MoMath May – June 2023 Upcoming Events

Dear MoMath friends,

Want to know a secret?  You can gain free access to MoMath events by signing up for the Math on the House mailing list, or gain free access to MoMath’s event recordings by becoming a member.  But that’s not the only secret at MoMath this month: learn the secrets of telling secrets at this week’s Math Discovery session, discover some hidden gems of geometry at Geometric Explorations, or find out how to incorporate math into fiber arts at Topological Crochet.  Want a quiet evening of learning from home?  Take a step back in time to explore
Euclid’s Elements with Chaim Goodman-Strauss, co-author of the groundbreaking new paper on “the Hat.”  Or experience high-energy fun at Loving Math or Krazy Kahoot, both featuring crowd-favorite host Steve Sherman, joining us all the way from South Africa.  And this month’s Math Encounters is simply “knot” to be missed — harness the power of mathematics and the fourth dimension to unlock the secrets of knots.  All-engaging math, all the time, only at MoMath!

The Museum is open from 10 am to 5 pm ET, seven days a week, 364 days a year.  The Museum occasionally closes early for events; please check visit.momath.org for more information.

Tuesday, May 2 at 6:30 pm ET

Join Distinguished Visiting Professor Tim Chartier and author Matt Parker for an engaging discussion of Humble Pi: When Math Goes Wrong in the Real World.  Our whole world is built on math, from the code running a website to the equations enabling the design of skyscrapers and bridges.  Most of the time, this math works quietly behind the scenes… until it doesn’t.  All sorts of seemingly innocuous mathematical mistakes can have significant consequences.  Math is easy to ignore until a misplaced decimal point upends the stock market.  Exploring and explaining a litany of glitches, near misses, and mathematical mishaps involving the internet, big data, elections, street signs, lotteries, the Roman
Empire, and an Olympic team, Matt Parker uncovers the bizarre ways math trips us up, and what this reveals about its essential place in our world.  Register at volumes.momath.org.
