The MOST program provides early-career female mathematicians with professional development and speaking opportunities to advance and inspire others through math outreach.

Why is the order of operations in that order?  Let’s take a peek behind the scenes of abstract algebra to better understand operations, how they work, and if they can be applied to objects other than numbers.

Indulge in mathematical fun that extends into the evening!  Participants will also explore the Museum’s dynamic exhibits, engage with a peer group that’s passionate about math, and enjoy decadent hot cocoa and chocolate chip cookies all night long.

“A Detective’s Guide to Graph Theory”

Featuring MOST Fellow Rachel Lawrence

Become an investigative mathematician for a day — no prior experience necessary!  Your adventure begins when you encounter a mysterious situation in the wild.  Follow a trail of clues to uncover the facts and form a mathematical hypothesis.  Continue your pursuit until you can expose the truth, once and for all.  Along the way, you’ll meet a few of the major characters in graph theory and some unexpected connections they’ve been hiding.  Learn how to conclude your investigation with an elegant proof of your discoveries, an argument clear enough to convince any judge and jury.

“Clocks, Chords, and Counting:
Exploring hidden structures of mathematics through the number 12

Twelve hours on a clock, twelve inches in a foot, twelve donuts in a dozen — why do we measure so many things in 12s?  Join mathematician Juliana Bukoski, a Fellow from MoMath’s Mathematics Outreach Seminar and Training (MOST) program, as we learn how to count by 12s, investigate the special mathematical properties of 12, and even discover how those properties relate to the music we listen to every day.

Indulge in mathematical fun that extends into the evening!  Participants will also explore the Museum’s dynamic exhibits, engage with a peer group that’s passionate about math, and enjoy decadent hot cocoa and chocolate chip cookies all night long.

Program Policies

Students must be dropped off and picked up by an adult chaperone (with one exception at MoMath’s discretion): An adult chaperone (a parent, guardian, or other designated provider) must be present to sign in/out each student.  The adult chaperone must provide a mobile number to be contacted in the event of an emergency during the event.  Students cannot sign themselves in for the event nor self-dismiss, and curbside drop-offs and pick-ups cannot be accommodated.  An exception to this policy may be granted, at MoMath’s sole discretion, to registered attendees ages 16 and older who can show proof of age with a valid photo ID. (MoMath reserves the right to revoke any exceptions previously granted at any time, should any concerns arise about the safety and security of the event and its participants or for any reason.)

This is strictly a students-only event: For the safety and security of the event attendees, only registered students and MoMath event staff and volunteers will be admitted into the event space — there are no exceptions.  For unregistered guests, a publicly accessible restroom is available in Madison Square Park, which is conveniently located across the street from the Museum.  During the event, adults may stand in the lobby or leave the Museum to return no later than 8:00 pm to pick up their child(ren).  If you intend to pick up your child before the event ends, it is recommended that you inform a MoMath staff member at drop-off as well as coordinate directly with your child via their mobile so that your child knows to come to the lobby at the designated time.

MoMath’s photography and media releases: By registering for this event, all participants inherently agree to the terms and conditions of MoMath’s standard photograph permission and release form.  All participants of any event at MoMath must agree to these terms.  If you would like to request that your child is not photographed during an event, please discuss this at drop-off with the manager in charge.  While MoMath may not be able to accommodate all requests, it is uncommon for MoMath to take event photographs of sessions and/or we will try to not include your child in photos, if possible.

Appropriate behavior: All students and adult chaperones are expected to exhibit good behavior and compliance with program policies to ensure a positive experience for everyone.  At its sole discretion, MoMath may remove a student from the event for behavioral reasons or for noncompliance with policies and their parent/guardian will be contacted for immediate pick-up.  If a student is removed from the event, for either a single event or for all future events, no refund or credit will be issued.
