The 2025 Steven H. Strogatz Prize
for Math Communication

Students who are 15 to 18 years old (on September 1, 2024) are invited to apply for the Steven H. Strogatz Prize for Math Communication to share their love of math with the world!

Cash prizes will be awarded for compelling math communication projects, and winning entries will be recognized online.

Send us your reels, blogs, podcasts, artwork, TikTok videos, podcasts, songs, musings… or any other mode of public communication celebrating the universality of math… and you could win!  Entries will be judged based on content, creativity, and communication.

The deadline for submitting a complete application for the 2025 Strogatz Prize will be April 23, 2025.

Submission categories

Projects will be accepted in the following categories:

  • Art
  • Audio
  • Performance
  • Social media
  • Video
  • Writing

Examples include: podcasts, articles, school newspaper columns, art exhibits, YouTube videos, websites, Instagram accounts, songs, plays, and any other mode of public communication.

Judging criteria

Projects will be judged based on:

  • Content
  • Creativity
  • Communication

Projects should appeal to a general audience and should illuminate something about mathematics, such as a concept explained or illustrated well, or an insight about mathematics or about the human experience of mathematics.  Showing is better than telling; aha moments or novel ways of communicating concepts are encouraged.  The emphasis is on skillful, engaging communication that will draw the audience in and leave them feeling enriched.  Descriptions of community outreach projects are not recommended, although work done as part of a community outreach project may be submitted if appropriately falling within one of the stated categories.  Research papers are unlikely to be selected for an award unless they fully meet the contest criteria.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible to apply for and win the 2025 Strogatz Prize, all applicants must meet both of these two criteria: (1) be enrolled in high school (grades 9 through 12), secondary school, or the equivalent, for the 2024–2025 academic year; and (2) be 15 to 18 years of age on September 1, 2024.

An applicant may choose to submit a project as an individual, or collectively submit a project as a pair of students or a small team of students.  Collective applications will be permitted so long as each student in the collaboration is currently enrolled in high school and is 15 to 18 years of age on September 1, 2024.  Any prize money would be shared among all teammates.

In honor of Steven Strogatz

Steven H. Strogatz is an applied mathematician who works in the areas of nonlinear dynamics and complex systems, often on topics inspired by the curiosities of everyday life.  He loves finding math in places where you’d least expect it — and then using it to illuminate life’s mysteries, big and small.

For example, why is it so hard to fall asleep a few hours before your regular bedtime?  When you start chatting with a stranger on a plane, why is it so common to find that you have a mutual acquaintance?  What can twisting a rubber band teach us about our DNA?  An award-winning researcher, teacher, and communicator, Steve enjoys sharing the beauty of math though his books, essays, public lectures, and radio and television appearances.

This award was established in Steve’s honor while encouraging and rewarding students who are interested in both math and communications.  This is part of a greater math outreach effort that has been so important to Steve as part of his life’s work.
