David Reimann, MoMath's Visiting Professor Tim Chartier

Did you ever wonder what a mathematician does all day?  Or what made someone decide to become a mathematician?  Or even, what a mathematician does for fun?  You may be surprised by some of the answers!

Join David Reimann, MoMath’s 2024–2025 Visiting Professor for Public Outreach, as he welcomes mathematician Tim Chartier to the MoMath stage to share his experiences, his stories, and his love of mathematics.

Tim is the Joseph R. Morton Professor of Mathematics and Computer Science at Davidson College, an applied mathematician specializing in computer science and sports analytics who has worked with NBA, NFL, and NASCAR teams.  In addition, he has overseen analytics projects for Davidson College sports teams, directing up to 100 student researchers at a time.  An award-winning teacher and author of notable works including Math Bytes and When Life Is Linear, Tim also served as MoMath’s Visiting Professor during the 2022–2023 academic year, sharing his expertise in sports analytics and its many connections to mathematics.

Don’t miss this lively conversation exploring how math shapes both our careers and our hobbies, and discover what makes mathematicians tick — both inside and outside of the classroom!
