MAPS, the MoMath Annual Puzzle-hunt Series
Frequently Asked Questions
- What is the MoMath Annual Puzzle-hunt Series (MAPS)? The MoMath Annual Puzzle-hunt Series (MAPS) is the first of a series of annual “puzzle hunts” that will be presented by MoMath. Each puzzle hunt is a 3-hour event (2:00 pm to 5:00 pm on Saturday, November 8) during which participants solve puzzles in small teams across three locations around MoMath.
- What is a puzzle hunt and what kinds of puzzles will we solve? This puzzle hunt features a series of individual puzzles leading up to a final “metapuzzle.” You don’t need to solve every puzzle to tackle the metapuzzle — though each one may help. A puzzle can take many forms: a set of images, a crossword, a map, or even a page that seems like complete nonsense. Typically, you won’t be given detailed instructions — part of the fun is figuring out what to do. Each puzzle ultimately leads to a single English word or a familiar phrase as its answer.
- How challenging is MAPS? MAPS is designed to be accessible and engaging for solvers of all experience levels. Most puzzles are introductory in nature, allowing a team of three to six participants to complete the Hunt within the allotted time. If you’re familiar with other puzzle events, expect a difficulty level similar to Puzzled Pint; some puzzles a bit easier, some a bit trickier. For those seeking an extra challenge, an expert track will also be available.
- Do I need to have advanced math skills to participate? No. This puzzle hunt is designed to be friendly towards newcomers and families. It would be helpful (but not absolutely necessary) to have a smartphone or other device to look things up online, but you do not need to have advanced math skills.
- Is this a competitive event or just for fun? This is designed to be a fun event, and not competitive. If you want an extra challenge, you may request the “Expert” track on the day of the hunt to receive a slightly harder version of the same puzzles.
- Will the event be re-scheduled in case of rain? No. Please bring an umbrella if it does rain.
Registration & Teams
- Do I need to register as a team or individually? It is necessary to register individually, and then form your own team. For example, if three people want to participate as a team, each member should register individually, and then notify the event organizer on the day of the hunt that you will be hunting as a team.
- Can I participate if I don’t have a team? Yes — it is possible to participate in and finish the hunt in a team of one.
- Can teams have more than six people? Yes, as long as everyone has registered for the hunt. We recommend three to six people for the most fun, but smaller or larger teams are also permitted.
- Can we change team members after registering? Yes, as long as each participant has registered.
Age & Participation
- What are the age requirements for participants? The hunt is open to people who are 16+, or 14+ if accompanied by an adult guardian.
- If I’m under 16, can I join with an adult guardian? Yes, as long as you’re at least 14.
- Is this event appropriate for families or beginners? Yes.
Logistics & Location
- Where does the event start and end? The event will start promptly at 2:00 pm at Additions, the shop at MoMath, where it will also end.
- Will the puzzles take us all around New York City or just the NoMad district? The puzzles will be spread around three locations (one of which is MoMath itself); each is at most a 20-minute walk from MoMath.
- How much walking is involved? The entire route will be a 45–50 minute walk. Wear comfortable shoes and please bring an umbrella if it rains.
- Will the event take place rain or shine? Yes.
- Is there a place to store personal belongings? No.
- How long will it take to complete the hunt? The event will run from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, and we expect teams to finish by around 4:45 pm. If you have not finished by 5:00 pm, you’re welcome to take the puzzles with you and finish them from home.
