Integrators: The MoMath High School Volunteer Program
MoMath accepts a limited number of high school students for ongoing volunteer roles during summer vacation and/or the academic year.  The Integrators program offers a unique chance to improve interpersonal and communication skills, explore mathematical concepts, and learn valuable job skills.  MoMath students interact with visitors (on the Museum floor or online) and train with professional educators, interpreters, and managers.  Students who participate during summer vacation commit five days per week.  During the school year, this opportunity requires a commitment of approximately one day per week, typically a Saturday or Sunday, from September through June.  Apply now for the 2022–2023 school year (online and/or in person)!  Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.

Please note that the Integrators volunteer program is unpaid.  More information on Integrators is available here.

Apply now for the 2022–2023 academic year, summer 2022, or both (online and/or in person)!  The application for Integrators is available here.  Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis.

Integrator (Volunteer Docent)
MoMath accepts volunteer Integrators who interact with individual visitors and school groups on the exhibition floor in order to help them have a rewarding Museum experience.  Integrators engage with children and adults exploring the Museum, and explain the various math concepts demonstrated through the exhibits.  This position requires a strong math background, the ability to connect with learners of all ages, and a comfort with hands-on education.  More information is available here.

Other volunteer opportunities
MoMath welcomes volunteers who provide valuable support in a variety of individual ways across the Museum, in both public-facing and internal roles.  Some common examples include assisting with check-in and registration for Museum programs, and interacting with visitors at the events and demonstrations MoMath presents at locations around New York City and in other cities.  MoMath also benefits from professionals who generously donate their expertise and time as educators, administrators, and technologists.  To apply, please email the following materials to volunteer@momath.org with a subject line that includes “Volunteer” and your name: a cover letter that describes your background and how you might contribute; your résumé, including grade point averages; and a freshly written 150- to 500-word statement describing your views on mathematics or a life experience you have had related to mathematics.

Here’s what college and high school volunteers have said about their experience:

“What I enjoy most about volunteering at MoMath is that I learn interesting, in-depth material on the exhibits, and then get to help spread knowledge and appreciation of math.  Watching a guest’s face light up after they understand my explanation of an exhibit is one of the most gratifying moments I have ever experienced; I know after volunteering at MoMath that I want to spend the rest of my life in math and math education.”

“It was great to work in a place where mathematics was more than just numbers.”

“I enjoyed [volunteering at] MoMath, especially working in the offices, where I witnessed the inner-workings of the museum and helped on a diverse set of projects.”

“I fostered great relationships with the staff members.  Some of them I still see today, three years later!”

“Volunteering at MoMath has been a wonderful experience!  I love sharing my passion for mathematics with others, while simultaneously expanding my knowledge.”

“The MoMath [volunteer program] was a great mix of math exploration and work experience.  It was fun to participate in the frequent math training sessions, where we discussed some aspect of an exhibit in-depth, and then share my new appreciation of the exhibit with visitors later in the week.  Aside from the useful experience in a variety of settings, [it] helped me learn to explain complicated topics more clearly, as well as understand them better myself.”

“[This] is a great chance to learn how to interact with people, take this opportunity.  Also, listen a lot, the people at MoMath are great!”
