May 19 - Pythagoras' Revenge by Arturo Sangalli
Summary: The celebrated mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras left no writings. But what if he had and the manuscript was never found. Where would it be located? And what information would it reveal? These questions are the inspiration for the mathematical mystery novel, Pythagoras’ Revenge.
Suspenseful and instructive, Pythagoras’ Revenge weaves fact, fiction, mathematics, computer science, and ancient history into a surprising and sophisticated thriller. It’s a murder mystery that introduces the reader to various big ideas in mathematics, from infinite series to unsolved problems.
June 9 - Flatterland: Like Flatland Only More So, by Ian Stewart
Summary: First there was Edwin A. Abbott's remarkable Flatland, published in 1884, one of the all-time classics of popular mathematics. Now, mathematician and accomplished science writer Ian Stewart, brings us what Nature calls "a superb sequel.”
Flatterland explores our present understanding of the shape and origins of the universe, the nature of space, time, and matter, as well as modern geometries and their applications. Stewart has also recently published an annotated Flatland so if you want a Flatland refresher before reading June’s selection, you may want to pick that up.
