Why is the coloring of maps an interesting mathematical problem?  How can we visualize a map on a torus (doughnut shape)?  Join mathematician and mathematical artist Dr. Eve Torrence for this hands-on workshop that combines paper folding, topology, and graph theory to create a three-dimensional mathematical sculpture that demonstrates one case of a theorem that took more than 70 years to prove!

Special introduction by Uyen Nguyen, origami fashion designer and educator.

To fully participate in this workshop online you will need to prepare an origami kit ahead of time. Preparing a kit will take 2–3 hours. Building an origami torus is not required in order to enjoy this talk, so preparing a kit is not required. 

To fully participate, please have the following materials handy:

• Printouts to be provided upon registration
• To make a kit you will need 45 pieces of 6” x 6” (or similar size) square paper: 6 pink, 6 orange, 6 blue, 6 yellow, 7 red, 7 purple, and 7 green. 
• Clear tape
