Calling all film buffs, math lovers, and those who have an interest in world history: MoMath is offering a special sneak preview of the new film Adventures of a Mathematician, in advance of its October 1 public release date. Watch the movie on your own using a special link, then join us for an online Q&A with writer/director Thor Klein and technology historian George Dyson, moderated by award-winning author, mathematician, and NY Times blogger Steve Strogatz. The film is a thought-provoking account of the brilliant 30-year-old Polish Jewish mathematician, a bon vivant who fled Europe in the 1930s and, through his friendship with Hungarian genius Johnny von Neumann, found himself accepting a mysterious job in Los Alamos, New Mexico. Surrounded by young, eccentric, charismatic immigrant scientists, Stan begins top secret work for the Manhattan Project while also making impressive contributions to mathematics and computer science along the way. Participation is limited on a first-come, first-served basis.
Adventures of a Mathematician is presented by Samuel Goldwyn Films and is based on the autobiography of the same name by Stanislaw (Stan) Ulam. The movie premiered at the 2020 Palm Springs International Film Festival.
Writer/Director Thor Klein is based in Berlin, Germany. He studied screenwriting at the prestigious Film and Television Academy Berlin (dffb). Adventures of a Mathematician is his first English language feature.
Science Advisor George Dyson is an independent historian of technology whose subjects have included the evolution of artificial intelligence (Darwin Among the Machines, 1997) and why analog computing has returned (Analogia, 2020).
