Decisions Without Promises

How do we decide between Option A and Option B?  We estimate probabilities, gains, and losses, and try to determine which option is the best on average.

But what if we're allowed to choose A, and if we don't like how things go, switch to B?  Maybe B seems better but we'd find out quickly whether A is any good, so we should try A first.  Can these considerations somehow be taken into account?
