Math Encounters:
"Halving Your Cake: The Trials and Tribulations of Fair Division"
featuring Deanna Haunsperger

Tuesday, April 4 at 4:00 pm ET

(in person)

Here's a problem as old as humanity: given a resource to be shared (water, land, cake), how can it be shared fairly among several people?  The answer, in the case of just two people, is simple and ancient and known to every five-year-old with a sibling: I cut, you choose.  Things get much more interesting and challenging if one has more than one sibling.  How do we make fair divisions?  Join Deanna Haunsperger, Professor of Mathematics, Carleton College, for this tasty exploration of sharing.

Special introduction by Tim Chartier, Distinguished Visiting Professor for the Public Dissemination of Mathematics, National Museum of Mathematics.
