Math Encounters:
“Shockwaves: the Mathematics of Tears of Wine”
with Andrea Bertozzi

Special introduction by
Krešimir Penavić of Clai Winery

Wednesday, July 1 at 7:00 pm EDT (New York)

Sit back and relax with a glass of wine (alcoholic or not), and learn something new as Andrea Bertozzi illustrates the mathematics behind the little shock waves going through your vessel of vino, creating a weepy pattern of “wine tears” on the inside of your glass!

For the interactive portion of the presentation, you may wish to have the following (optional) materials handy:

  • A wine glass, spirit glass (ideally, martini), or glass pan
  • Port or higher-alcohol red wine or dark-colored liquor (ideally at 75 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit); or, cooking oil
  • A white or light-colored table or tablecloth, or white piece of paper on a table
  • A flashlight (for example, your phone's flashlight)
  • Something to cover the glass

Or, simply sip your beverage of choice and listen to the presentation.

This is a live-streamed event.  Occasional video recordings are made available for a fee at videos.momath.org.
