Providing a coherent, joyful story-line to the K-12 mathematics
experience both in and out of the classroom.

World-recognized mathematics and mathematics education leaders come together to discuss concrete, innovative steps forward to ensure the widespread joy and relevance for all — students, teachers, and parents alike — in deep mathematics learning, thinking, and doing. Our goal is to ensure that both curricular and extra-curricular mathematics work hand-in-hand to give an uplifting and meaningful experience for all.

This symposium will lie at the interface between in-classroom and out-of-classroom work, sitting at the creative space between formal education and outreach. Together, we will develop a body of ideas and themes to bring into the classroom and to support outreach activities.

The symposium will include James Tanton's "mind-blowing" Exploding Dots workshop, lively panel discussions, and a series of "Ignite" talks. It will also feature a broad group of top mathematicians, math educators, and math outreach leaders, such as Po Shen Loh, coach of USA gold-medal-winning IMP team, Henry Segerman, researcher in 3D geometry and topology, Cathy Seeley, former president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and Paul Zeitz, Chairman of the Board of Proof School.

A celebration of Global Math Week will also take place later that evening at the National Museum of Mathematics, from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm. Come experience more than three dozen engaging math exhibits, plus enjoy music and refreshments, with some of the nation’s top names in mathematics. This event is free for all symposium attendees.

The symposium and the following celebratory event at the nation's only Museum of Mathematics will serve as the kickoff event for Global Math Week 2017.
