Dear MoMath friends,
Step into summer with MoMath! Learn to beat the house at blackjack, find connections between fiction writing and mathematics, stop by the Flatiron Plaza for a bit of interactive fun in the sun, and take a mathematical tour of beautiful Madison Square Park. Plus, don’t miss the hottest MoMath event of the year, as MoMath celebrates diversity and inclusion with its annual Pride event. All adults are welcome to this late-night event with music, drinks, and partying on Manhattan’s most interactive dance floor. Can’t make it on the 21st? The party continues on the 23rd, with the third installation of Quadrivium, this time featuring global phenom James Tanton along with jazz saxophonist Marcus Miller and musical director Mark Gross for an all-ages evening of math, music, and fun.

Sign up now for 2018 Transformations summer camp at MoMath!
Rising first through ninth graders, spend the summer exploring the fun and beauty of mathematics with MoMath’s dynamic camp program. Campers come back year after year to discover the never-ending wonders of mathematics, so sign up early for a spot. This year, MoMath introduces the new Gammas level, exclusively for deep-diving seventh through ninth graders! To learn more, visit summercamp.momath.org. High school students: Volunteer at MoMath on weekends during the 2018-2019 school year.
High school students with a love of math can become a part of MoMath. Gain valuable experience while helping others and add something unique to your college applications. Applications for 2018-2019 high school volunteer positions (starting in September 2018) are now available at volunteers.momath.org, and applications received by June 30 will be given top priority for acceptance into the program.
Weekend programs for families
Take a tour with MoMath’s Derivatives program (derivatives.momath.org) or join one of MoMath’s specially-trained educators in Explorations, a hands-on classroom experience to discover the wonder of mathematics (explorations.momath.org). Retail Pick of the Month – Martin’s Menace
While away the lazy days of summer with Martin’s Menace, an original Stewart Coffin puzzle named after one of the greatest puzzle minds of the 20th century, Martin Gardner. Understanding the Mathematics of Blackjack, with Blackjack Hall of Fame member and author Don Schlesinger
Wednesday, May 30, 6:30 pm
Don Schlesinger, one of the world’s foremost authorities on the game of casino blackjack and author of the highly respected Blackjack Attack: Playing the Pros’ Way, will explain the mathematical principles that apply to the game and why skillful blackjack players can obtain an advantage over the house. Attendees will learn how the basic strategy of play was derived and will have the opportunity to participate in a demonstration of the Hi-Lo card counting system. Camp staff will provide an overview of summer camp at MoMath, lead sample activities, and answer specific questions. Attendance is optional for children. Math Encounters: “From Fairy Tales to Finite Elements: How Mathematics Connects with Fiction” with Manil Suri

Join mathematician, bestselling novelist, and frequent New York Times op-ed writer Manil Suri on a fascinating exploration of the mathematical essence of fiction. Jazz musicians and mathematicians view their work in much the same way: mastery of theory, problem solving, skill sets, and joyous, spontaneous creation are all part of the deep history and the ongoing development of jazz and mathematics. Quadrivium, a new Math + Music after-hours event at MoMath hosted by jazz saxophonist Marcus Miller, brings together the creative and technical communities in NYC and creates a space where learning and growth are filled with fun, wonder, and warmth. The next installment of the series will feature Mark Gross, the musical director of the New Jersey Performing Arts Center Jazz Education, and James Tanton, Chair of the MoMath Advisory Council, Mathematician in Residence at the Mathematical Association of America, and founder of the Global Math Project. Get a behind-the-scenes look at the tech that makes the magic happen and a sneak peek at some of the exciting new projects in the works. Hack in teams to imagine how the latest augmented reality platforms can be used to expand an exhibit experience beyond the physical world, develop interactive web features and demonstrations of your favorite mathematical topics, or experiment with software development kits for two of the Museum’s breathtaking exhibits, Dynamic Wall and Math Square. Math Walk in the Park, with Ron Lancaster

Put on a pair of imaginary mathematical glasses with MoMath and internationally acclaimed educator Ron Lancaster. Take a tour through beautiful Madison Square Park to find a host of hidden mathematical objects, including hexagons, chessboards, and even a mysterious appearance of the Fibonacci sequence hundreds of feet above the park! Discover the math in New York’s iconic Flatiron Building and take a mathematical look at ice cream prices and queuing theory at the Shake Shack.
