2017 MoMathlon Tournaments: Teachers, there’s still space left for you to bring a team!
Playing a sport, being on a team, competition… every middle school student deserves a chance to experience the fun and exhilaration of making friends and working with them toward a goal; it can build confidence and teach skills that last a lifetime.  MoMath provides New York kids this opportunity every March and April, when, together with supporters Con Edison and Brookhaven National Laboratory, it sponsors several middle school math tournaments, culminating in a thrilling tournament of champions.  These unique tournaments allow budding mathematicians to experience the same thrills that student athletes receive from their pursuits: challenges, teamwork, refreshments, souvenirs, trophies, and memories that will inspire them in high school, college, and beyond.  For more information and to register, visit momathlon.momath.org.

2017 Transformations summer camp registration

2017 Rosenthal Prize for Innovation and Inspiration in Math Teaching
Teachers, the application process for the 2017 Rosenthal Prize is now open!  Designed to recognize and promote hands-on math teaching in upper elementary and middle school classrooms, the Rosenthal Prize carries a cash award of $25,000 for the single best activity, plus up to five additional monetary awards for other innovative activities.  The winning teacher(s) will have the opportunity to share their innovative ideas with educators across the country.  Learn more at rosenthalprize.momath.org or visit MoMath’s booth at the NCTM conference in San Antonio for hints and tips on submitting a competitive application.

Leonardo and Luca: Using art to understand mathematics

The mysterious powers of mathematics and its application to art were favorite subjects in the court of Milan when Luca Pacioli and Leonardo da Vinci were there in the late 1490s.  Hundreds of years later, making models can still help us understand mathematics.  MoMath welcomes Dutch artist Rinus Roelofs, whose work exemplifies the connection between math and art, as he guides us all in making our own Leonardo-style polyhedral models.  Learn more and register at leonardo.momath.org.

What do Michael Jordan, Brad Pitt, Lisa Kudrow, Quentin Tarantino, and Conan O’Brien have in common?  They are all as old as the modern U.S. $1 bill!  Money intrigues and motivates everyone, young and old.  Who could have predicted that our common $1 bill could have a multitude of arithmetic, geometric, and origami connections?  Award-winning educator Dave Masunaga returns to share the amazing story behind this rectangle, what it has to do with radar and bowties, and when $1 can be worth much more than a dollar!  Samples will be handed out.  Learn more and register at familyfridays.momath.org.

Renee Feuer is a spirited but floundering Princeton graduate student when she first catches the eye of living math legend Noam Himmel.  Their courtship is an intellectual one, spiced with heady discussions on philosophy and math with an occasional dash of physics thrown in.  Once the blush of new romance wears off, however, Renee finds intellectual theory wanting as she struggles to come to terms with her orthodox Jewish upbringing, her own sexuality, and the husband who is physically present but mentally absent as he works on his next great theory.  Learn more and register at volumes.momath.org.

Math Encounters: “Star Trek: The Math of Khan” with James Grime
Wednesday, April 5, 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm
Star Trek featured many futuristic ideas: warp drives, transporters, and travel to strange new worlds, all of which have been discussed in great detail by experts and nerds alike.  But what about the math of Star Trek?  After all, there’s no such thing as Math Fiction…  In fact, Star Trek featured many interesting mathematical ideas, including a paradox that upset both 20th century mathematicians and 23rd century androids; the mathematics of alien biology; and the most important question of all — when on a dangerous away mission, does the color of your shirt really affect your chances of survival?  Don’t worry, there won’t be any lens flares as mathematician/Star Trek fan James Grime beams to MoMath to share the Math of Khan.  Special introduction by Connor Trinneer, “Commander ‘Trip’ Tucker” of Star Trek: Enterprise.  Learn more and register at mathencounters.org.

As the book opens, Spectrum agent Ruby is at dive school in Hawaii, confronting one of her few fears (claustrophobia) and ignoring the sharks around her.  Back home in Twinford, you can be sure both these elements will resurface — along with pirates who are trying to kill her parents, messages sent over Muzak radio stations, a peculiarly potent sea monster, family legends featuring brave little girls and large gemstones, and the return of the evil Count von Viscount.  Graphics include musical scores, maps that organize ideas and events, and Morse code, complete with appendices that discuss codebreaking in music, text, and graphics.  Learn more and register at tweenprimes.momath.org.

A modern classic, Einstein’s Dreams is a fictional collage of stories dreamed by Albert Einstein in 1905, when he worked in a patent office in Switzerland.  As the defiant but sensitive young genius is creating his theory of relativity, a new conception of time, he imagines many possible worlds.  In poetic vignettes, it explores the connections between science and art, the process of creativity, and, ultimately, the fragility of human existence.  Learn more and register at volumes.momath.org.

Expansions: MoMath’s innovative program to engage and challenge NYC’s brightest math students
Reinvent math class with Expansions, MoMath’s afternoon gifted program.  Featuring programs for all mathematically gifted students currently enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade, Expansions workshops are designed and delivered by MoMath’s educational team to challenge and inspire students and to broaden their mathematical horizons.  Apply now at expansions.momath.org.
