Opening to the public: Friday, September 30, 10:00 am – 5:00 pm
Don’t miss the fast-paced excitement of Super Cube Shuffle, opening at MoMath on September 30 courtesy of our friends at Bedtime Math.  Recreate amazing patterns from simple red and white triangles, but you’ll have to be quick…the spinning tower only allows your design to swing into view once every few seconds.  Test your memory and your spatial reasoning skills as you race to be the first to complete your geometric pattern.  Super Cube Shuffle will only be at MoMath for a limited time, so don’t miss out.  The exhibit opens to the public on September 30, but members can enjoy a special sneak preview on September 29 at 5 pm.  Register now for the member preview at supercube.momath.org.

Last day to submit your song for Open Set, MoMath's annual mathematical song contest
Friday, September 30
Make math your muse! MoMath is now accepting submissions for its annual mathematical song competition, Open Set.  Write your own words to a favorite tune or compose your own melody; the only rules are that the lyrics must be original and must be about math or a mathematical concept. The winners will be announced and will have a chance to perform their winning songs at an open mic night at MoMath. Submissions will be accepted through September 30. Submit your song at openset.momath.org.

Math Encounters: "3D Shadows: Casting Light on the Fourth Dimension" with Henry Segerman
Wednesday, October 5, 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm
Living in a three-dimensional environment, we’re all very good at visualizing two- and three-dimensional objects.  But how can we understand four-dimensional objects?  Join mathematician Henry Segerman as he casts light on the fourth dimension, using 3D-printed shadows to squish four-dimensional shapes into our three-dimensional world.  Along the way, explore fantastical sculptures, intriguing puzzles, and virtual reality experiences that come from thinking about these extra-dimensional shadows.  Special introduction by Patrick Honner, recipient of the 2013 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.  Learn more and register at mathencounters.org.

Family Fridays at MoMath presented by Time Warner Cable: "Chameleon Cubes" with Harold Reiter
Friday, October 7, 6:30 pm
Let's get creative with cubes!  Use three colors to decorate the faces of 27 small cubes, then put them together to form a 3x3x3 cube.  But wait, there's a catch: can you color the little cubes so that the large cube looks like it's all one color?  Can you change it to a different color?  How about the third color?  Join mathematician Harold Reiter as he takes us on a colorful journey into the combinatorial properties of cubes.  Learn more and register at familyfridays.momath.org.

Transformations fall camp: "Puzzle Me That"
Monday & Wednesday, October 10 & 12, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm
Fourth through eighth graders, solve, create, and enjoy a wide variety of physical puzzles, logic puzzles, and mazes using mathematical problem solving techniques.  MoMath's Transformations fall camps are a great way to spend school holidays and enjoy hands-on fun in mathematics.  Register at camps.momath.org.

dodecaRT at Google Geek Street Fair
Thursday, October 13, 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm
Note this event takes place in Union Square Park.
Join MoMath as we build dodecaRT!  Using colorful pentagons, we will first create a series of 12-sided figures called dodecahedra, then we’ll assemble those dodecahedra into rhombuses, and finally, we will come together for a "barn-raising" of the final construction.  Experience a sense of geometric wonder at the intricacy and complexity achieved by repeated use of simple geometric shapes.  The New York City Geek Street Fair hosted by Google is an interactive event to inspire kids to pursue careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) and computer science.  This event is free and open to the public.

Volumes, the MoMath book club: Fluke: The Math and Myth of Coincidences
Thursday, October 13, 6:00 pm
Fluke, this month’s selection for Volumes, the MoMath book club, is not a fluke.  It is an entertaining guide to the most surprising moments in our lives.  Join us and special Volumes guest, Fluke author Joseph Mazur, to talk about chance and coincidence in a casual setting with coffee and cookies.  Fluke will surprise you!  You will learn, for instance, that DNA matching is not always clear evidence of guilt in court, and that meeting an acquaintance on your only trip to Disneyland may not be as unlikely as you thought.  You won’t want to miss this edition of Volumes!  Learn more and register at volumes.momath.org.

The Insides of Things: The Art of Miguel Berrocal opening in Composite, the gallery at MoMath
Thursday, October 13, 6:30 pm
Join MoMath for the opening of The Insides of Things: The Art of Miguel Berrocal.  Featuring the work of Spanish sculptor Miguel Berrocal, MoMath's newest art exhibit will showcase the masterful craftsmanship of Berrocal’s art.  Try your hand at assembling and disassembling a replica of one of Berrocal’s stunning works and see why this piece has something in common with MoMath's Enigma Café.  Don’t miss this intriguing new show in Composite, the gallery at MoMath: register now to attend the opening reception.  Admission is free, but registration is required.  To register, visit berrocal.momath.org.

The National Museum of Mathematics wishes to thank the late Samuel Sensiper for his donation of the Berrocal collection as well as Michele and Stan Rosen for supporting the opening reception in his memory.

Volumes, the MoMath book club: The Mathematician’s Shiva: A Novel by Stuart Rojstaczer
Thursday, November 17, 6:00 pm
When the greatest female mathematician in history passes away, her son, Alexander “Sasha” Karnokovitch, just wants to mourn his mother in peace.  But rumor has it that the notoriously eccentric Polish émigré has solved one of the most difficult problems in mathematics, the Navier-Stokes Millennium Prize Problem, and may have taken the solution to her grave.  A motley group of mathematicians from around the world descend upon Rachel’s shiva, determined to find the proof or solve it for themselves.

Join us for a discussion of this multilayered (debut) novel full of colorful characters; it's an exploration of humanity’s drive not just to survive, but to solve the impossible. Refreshments will be served.  Learn more and register at volumes.momath.org.
