Send MoMath your best mathematical songs
Submissions accepted through October 9
Make math your muse! MoMath is now accepting submissions for an all-new mathematical song competition. Write your own words to a favorite tune or compose your own melody; the only rules are that the lyrics must be original and must be about math or a mathematical concept. The winners will be invited to participate in an open mic night at MoMath on Thursday, November 19. Send your submissions before October 9; see songs.momath.org.
Transitive Tuesdays: Members bring friends and family for free after 2 pm
Tuesdays in September
Members, now you can share MoMath with friends and family this September, when the Museum opens its doors to you and up to ten guests every Tuesday. For five special weeks, you can show your friends exactly what you love about the Museum. Not a member? Join now at momath.org/join.
Math Encounters: “How Fast Does It Grow?” with Dick Gross
Wednesday, September 2, 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm
Scale a mathematical mountain known as the factorial with former Dean of Harvard College and Leverett Professor of Mathematics Benedict Gross. The factorial function, usually written as n!, helps model innumerable different phenomena in the world around us, from the number of ways an election ballot can be filled out to the probabilities encountered in a game of poker. These wide-ranging applications lead us to want to know how quickly n! grows. Professor Gross will take us on a historical journey, starting with Louis XIV revoking the Edict of Nantes, that will show how mathematics can illuminate such questions of which quantities ultimately grow the fastest. Refreshments follow the afternoon
presentation of Math Encounters; arrive by 6:30 pm for refreshments preceding the evening presentation. Register at mathencounters.org.
M-Cubed: Mondays at MoMath
Monday, September 21 – Monday, November 30, 4:00 pm
Delve into the weird facts and human foibles behind mathematical discoveries with M-Cubed, a new ten-part series led by Rutgers professor Alex Kontorovich. Based on a popular class Alex taught at Yale, M-Cubed is an engaging, illuminating, exhilarating exploration of mathematical trials and breakthroughs over the centuries. An Ivy League-quality course without the Ivy League price, this intimately-sized class will be a unique fall adventure. If you love learning not just about formulas and proofs but about the problems, people, and stories behind them, you won't want to miss this. Learn more and register at mcubed.momath.org.
The Magic of Math: Solving for x and Figuring Out Why
Wednesday, September 23, 6:30 pm
Don’t miss a dazzling display of mathemagical entertainment as Harvey Mudd professor Dr. Arthur Benjamin fools around with Fibonacci numbers, investigates infinity, marvels over mathematical magic tricks, and performs amazing feats of rapid mental calculation. Plus, Art will be autographing copies of his new book, The Magic of Math, available for purchase from Additions, the shop at MoMath. This event is recommended for ages 10 and older. Learn more and register at mathmagic.momath.org.
Free Play: a free(!) afternoon at MoMath, brought to you by Citadel

For one afternoon, admission to MoMath will be completely free for all visitors! Come enjoy all your favorite exhibits — and if you have friends who have never been to the Museum, there's no better time to bring them along. Plus, MoMath will be open two hours later than usual, so you can optimize your fun. Free Play is made possible through the generous support of Citadel.
Family Fridays at MoMath presented by Time Warner Cable: “Connecting with Geometry”
Friday, September 25, 6:30 pm
Use modular origami to create elegant constructions out of multiple pieces of paper, just by folding, overlapping, and arranging, and then see how the right pressure can make these seemingly stable shapes flutter apart. The folding is easy; it's the assembly that's the challenge! What folded forms help you craft these space-filling butterfly balls? Join geometric artist Hans Schepker to discover the tricks of these compound paper creations. This presentation is free to attendees, as part of Time Warner Cable's Connect a Million Minds campaign. For more information and to register, visit familyfridays.momath.org.

Dimensions Puzzle Hunt: "What the Tortoise Taught Us"
Saturday, October 3, 3:00 pm
Puzzlers, unite! The Dimensions Puzzle Hunt is back with an all-new adventure entitled "What the Tortoise Taught Us." Produced by constructor Nathan Curtis for the 150th anniversary of the publication of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, this hunt promises an evening full of puzzles, conundrums, and other entertainments inspired by the work of Lewis Carroll. Dimensions is appropriate for adults and high school students. While expert teams may solve in two hours (or less), please allow up to four and a half hours for this event. Learn more and register at puzzlehunt.momath.org.
Math Encounters: “Lewis Carroll in Numberland” with Robin Wilson
Wednesday, October 7, 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm
If Charles Dodgson (aka Lewis Carroll) hadn’t written the Alice books, he’d probably be remembered as a pioneer Victorian photographer. But if he’d not been remembered for this, would he be remembered as a mathematics teacher at Oxford University? What mathematics did he do? And how good was he? Join UK mathematician Robin Wilson as he takes us on an illustrated journey through the looking glass, exploring math, puzzles, logic… and even monkeys! Refreshments follow the afternoon presentation of Math Encounters; arrive by 6:30 pm for refreshments preceding the evening presentation. Register at mathencounters.org.
Growing up with Gardner: a son's playful memories of Martin
Thursday, October 8, 7 pm
You may know Martin Gardner from his books and columns on mathematical games, his work debunking pseudoscience, or The Annotated Alice, his compendium of the mathematical riddles, wordplay, and references in Lewis Carroll's Alice books. But do you know what he kept in his pockets? Get the inside scoop on this incredible amateur mathematician and celebrated skeptic from one of the people who knew him best — his son, Jim Gardner. Register at gardner.momath.org.
Family Fridays at MoMath presented by Time Warner Cable: “Math Makes Music”
Friday, October 23, 6:30 pm
Over two thousand years ago, the Pythagoreans discovered relationships between the shapes of vibration of simple strings and the combinations of sound that please our ears and brains. Since then, mathematicians and scientists have learned a great deal about how sizes, shapes, and nonlinear dynamics of instruments determine their special sounds. Indeed, modern makers use math(!) as they design and build new instruments. Join Dr. Bruce Bayly, a singer and violinist as well as a mathematician, as he shows us the math behind the music. This program is recommended for participants ages 7 and up. This presentation is free to attendees, as part of Time Warner Cable's Connect a Million Minds campaign. For more information and to register, visit familyfridays.momath.org.
Party Under Construction: the 2015 MoMath Gala
Tuesday, October 27, 6:30 pm
Join MoMath for an elegant evening honoring Santiago Calatrava, architect of the Oculus, Manhattan's stunning new building. With good food, drink, and conviviality, celebrate Calatrava's sweeping designs and the way in which mathematics and its structures have inspired and enhanced the beauty and performance — the form and foundation — of the world we have built around us. Seating is limited; register now at gala.momath.org.
