MoMath is OPEN on December 25!

Wednesday, December 25, 10:00 am to 5:00 pm

New York's hottest new museum is open on December 25!  Manhattan streets are traffic-free, sidewalks are empty, and holiday shoppers are done for the season—there's no better time to venture to the Flatiron District, just a short walk from Penn Station, to try something fun and exciting. In the spirit of giving, MoMath delivers a seasonal opportunity for both kids and adults to explore mathematics through dozens of colorful, interactive exhibits.  Create your very own math logo, design a unique creation in MoMath's 3-D sculpture studio, and take a spin on square wheels.  All this and more awaits you at MoMath, where you can make celebrating the wonder of math part of a NYC holiday tradition. Plus, the One Hunt is still on — come and search for all of the number ones hidden around MoMath in honor of its first birthday.

MoMath Masters
Preview pricing available now!
Event to be held at Tribeca Rooftop on Tuesday, February 25, 6 pm.
Don't miss out on this fun-filled night of good food, good drink, suspense, excitement, and (of course) math.  From the entertaining cocktail round right through to the challenging finals, come see why the NY Times compared the Masters to the Super Bowl, describing the finals round as having the "same thrills, tension, [and] quick thinking under pressure…as a true sports event does." Will Shortz joins us again to host this fun-filled evening.  Preview pricing in effect through the end of December.  For more information and to register, visit masters.momath.org.

Math Encounters:  Linear Thinking, from Bracketology to Computer Graphics

What’s in a matrix? Enter the world of linear systems as mathematician Dr. Tim Chartier shows how matrices open the door to a diverse array of topics, from creating a March Madness bracket, to analyzing a car’s aerodynamics, to rendering cinematic special effects.  For further information and to register, visit mathencounters.org.

PolyPals:  Bring your toddlers and preschoolers to MoMath for afternoon fun!
Tuesday afternoons, Jan. 21, 28, Feb. 4, 11
Afternoons in 2014 just got exponentially more exciting!  PolyPals, MoMath's program for pre-K children, is taking off in the new year.  Beginning Tuesday, January 21 and meeting every Tuesday for four weeks, PolyPals will offer our littlest potential mathematicians the opportunity to listen to math-themed stories and have fun exploring the concepts behind them.  Led by MoMath's skilled educational staff, toddlers and pre-schoolers will participate in songs, stories, and activities tied to a different theme each week.  Patterns, shapes, numbers, and more—PolyPals is a great way to enrich your child's day with mathematical inspiration.  For further information and to register, visit polypals.momath.org.

Expansions:  MoMath’s new program to engage and challenge NYC’s brightest math students
Tuesday afternoons, Jan. 21, 28, Feb. 4, 11 (HS students)
Thursday afternoons, Jan. 23, 30, Feb. 6, 13 (K-8, separated by level)

January will see the launch of MoMath's after-school gifted program, Expansions.  Featuring programs for all mathematically gifted students currently enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade, the Expansions workshops are designed and delivered by MoMath's educational team to challenge and inspire students, and broaden their mathematical horizons. With topics ranging from fractals to cellular automata, these afternoon sessions will provide an opportunity for participants to learn advanced and fascinating topics not included in the standard K-12 curriculum.  Plus, your child can benefit from enjoying math together with small groups of talented and focused young scholars.
Beginning the week of January 21, Expansions offers the following four week sessions (differentiated by mathematical experience):

  • Tetrahedron, for those who are comfortable with addition and subtraction.  3:30-4:15, Thursdays.
  • Hexahedron, for those who've conquered multiplying and dividing.  4:15-5:00, Thursdays.
  • Octahedron, for those who commonly find common denominators.  3:30-4:45, Thursdays.
  • Dodecahedron, for those with functional knowledge of functions.  3:30-4:45, Thursdays.
  • Icosahedron, for those who routinely find roots of polynomials.  3:00-4:30, Tuesdays.

Entry is by application only; tuition is $200 per student.  For more information, or to request an application, email expansions@momath.org.
