Math Encounters: Mathemagician
Wednesday, December 4, 4:00 pm or 7:00 pm
Prepare to be mesmerized as award-winning Harvey Mudd Professor Art Benjamin demonstrates (and explains!) how to do rapid mental calculations and other amazing feats of mind. For further information and to register, visit mathencounters.org. Note that the 7:00 pm session is currently full, but you may register for the waiting list for that session, or for the 4:00 pm session. From 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm, Art will autograph his book, "Secrets of Mental Math: The Mathemagician's Guide to Lightning Calculation and Amazing Math Tricks," which may be purchased in advance from Additions online or on-site that evening.
Pythagorize the Flatiron!
Thursday, December 5, 6:54 pm
On December 5, 2013, Manhattan will see an awesome, one-of-a-kind spectacle when MoMath lights up one of the city's oldest landmarks: the Flatiron Building. In what might be one of the most unusual events of this holiday season, MoMath will create a stunning illuminated demonstration of the Pythagorean Theorem. By surrounding the entire structure with glow sticks, held in place by hundreds of New Yorkers, the length of the shimmering sides will show that the Flatiron Building is roughly based on a 5-12-13 right triangle. (It’s no coincidence that this event takes place on the only date in the next 92 years that includes this famous Pythagorean triple.) A further, even larger, display of three huge squares will form a demonstration of the famous theorem: a2 + b2 = c2.
“Pythagorize the Flatiron,” the first in a series of MoMath MathHappening events, promises to be the biggest, most amazing mathematics demonstration New York City has ever seen. If you want to help celebrate the city through math and art, and perhaps help make math history, visit pythagorize.momath.org to register for this rare and special opportunity!
Happy Birthday, MoMath

Family Friday: An Enigmatic Evening
Friday, December 13, 6:30 pm
Come play! Momath's Enigmaster, Pradeep Mutalik, will present puzzles and solutions that are cool, simple to understand, and memorable. The Enigmaster will explore several of his favorite puzzles, both mechanical and mathematical, to demonstrate how the joy of solving puzzles can be key to instilling a lifelong love of mathematics and general problem-solving. Grapple with your own puzzle as the Enigmaster provides hints and tips, leading you toward the Aha! moment of discovery. Admission is limited, so register soon for this edition of Family Fridays, appropriate for people ages 8 and up — kids and adults alike are sure to enjoy. Dr. Pradeep Mutalik, a.k.a the Enigmaster, is the curator of the Enigma Café and a research scientist at Yale Medical School. MoMath’s First Birthday Party
Sunday, December 15, 7:00 pm
December 15, 2013, marks one incredible year since the National Museum of Mathematics opened to the public, and what a year it has been! Almost 170,000 math fans have passed through the pi-handled doors, and MoMath is celebrating with the grand opening of a new exhibit, followed by a group construction event. Dynamic Wall, a kinetic mathematical showcase that forms the centerpiece of the lobby, will make its debut at 7 pm. This moving, computer-controlled wall will create a unique canvas on which to display a wide variety of wave phenomena, cellular automata, combinatorial algorithms, and more. Then, all attendees will work together to build Parabolic Falls, a life-sized, glowing mathematical sculpture using four six-foot tetrahedra, arranged as in the first approximation to a Sierpinski Tetrahedron. For further information and to register, visit one.momath.org.
