Join MoMath’s Distinguished Visiting Professor, Alex Kontorovich, in an exciting eight-week mini-course delving into the surprising connections between math and music — and featuring occasional live performances.
The lectures are aimed at a general (non-mathematician) audience, but during the course of discussions, we’ll inevitably touch on interesting topics you wouldn’t typically see unless you were in graduate school or beyond!
Please note that the following topics are subject to change:
Monday, January 25
The opening session will include an overview of the broad relationship between math and music.
Monday, February 8
At this second session, Alex welcomes an audiologist to discuss the math of hearing, which is instrumental to the enjoyment of music.
Monday, February 22
Rhythm is the most primordial human experience, with the heart starting to beat around three weeks after conception. (The brain only starts appearing two weeks later!) In this session, we will be joined by acclaimed trumpeter, composer, arranger, bandleader, and educator Dr. Anthony Branker to learn about the role of rhythm in music, and the mathematics thereof.
Monday, March 8
Featuring Ben Markham, acoustic engineer.
Monday, March 22
Featuring Luisa Pereira, musician, engineer, designer, creative technologist, and educator. Luisa teaches at NYU and has also taught in Shanghai, Berlin, and Montevideo. Pereira has collaborated with musicians including Björk, St. Vincent, Julianna Barwick, and Little Dragon.
Monday, April 12
Featuring Jeff Brock, Yale Dean of Science and jazz bassist. Jeff is the Zhao and Ji Professor of Mathematics at Yale University, where he’s also the Dean of the School of Engineering and Applied Science and the Dean of Science in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Brock earned his PhD at UC Berkeley under Fields Medalist Curt McMullen. He taught at Stanford, University of Chicago, and Brown University before moving to Yale.
Monday, April 26
Featuring Frank London, Grammy-winning klezmer trumpeter, composer, arranger, and bandleader with the Klezmatics and many many others.
Monday, May 10
Alex Kontorovich concludes the 8-week mini-course with “music of the primes” on the Riemann Hypothesis.
