NATIONAL MUSEUM OF MATHEMATICS
GRAND OPENING TO REVEAL WONDERS OF MATH
THROUGH DYNAMIC HANDS-ON EXHIBITS
Only Math Museum in the Nation
Opens to Public in New York City, Saturday, December 15th
MoMath will consist of a suite of newly-created exhibits, following on the heels of the successful Math Midway, a popular traveling exhibition that offers an interactive, hands-on tour of mathematical concepts in a carnival-style pop-up. The Math Midway launched in NYC in 2009, and has been making the rounds throughout the country for the past three years. The overwhelmingly positive response to the Math Midway convinced Glen Whitney that he and his team were onto something – that math exhibits could indeed attract an audience, as well as inspire participants of all ages to learn. Those who enjoyed the Math Midway will be delighted to know that its marquee exhibit, Pedal on the Petals, in which visitors ride a square-wheeled tricycle over a sunflower-shaped track, will be featured in the new museum, taking its place among two stories of innovative new offerings.
Leaving the textbook approach to math behind, MoMath will offer visitors astounding and novel ways to experience the reality of math. Among the more than 40 exhibits and activities that will be contained within MoMath’s 20,000 square feet are: Feedback Fractals, which uses ordinary video cameras to produce intricate and beautiful infinitely repeating patterns, and Wall of Fire, where visitors interact with a room-high plane of laser light to discover the hidden shapes lurking in everyday objects.
“There is nothing in the world that hasn’t been improved by math,” explained Glen Whitney, Executive Director of MoMath. “Math is fun, beautiful, and important to getting a really good job in today’s world. MoMath showcases the truly vast mathematical landscape and will take visitors on a numerical journey through the everyday world, providing vivid experiences that will leave them more aware of their mathematical surroundings.”
MoMath, located at 11 East 26th Street, will open to the public on Saturday, December 15, 2012. Museum hours are 10AM-5PM, and admission to opening weekend will be through advance ticket purchase, beginning later this fall. Adult tickets are $15; children’s tickets are $9.
The Museum’s Opening Ceremony, a black-tie gala, will be held on December 12th, 2012, but the event is sold out. Please click here to join the waiting list.
