Upcoming Events at MoMath
Dear MoMath friends,
MoMath is pleased to announce a number of exciting upcoming events:
Summer Camp at MoMath!
Calling all 4th through 8th graders—there are just a few spots left at MoMath’s exciting new summer camp program,
Transformations, during the weeks of July 22 and August 19. Don’t miss out on the inaugural season of summer fun with math. Need-based scholarships available. To register, visit
transformations.momath.org, or email
education@momath.org for more information.
Field Trips for 2013-2014—don’t miss out!
Teachers, don’t miss out on the opportunity to bring your classes to visit MoMath next year. Space is filling fast; visit
fieldtrips.momath.org to register for a group visit during the upcoming school year.
Folding in Geometry
Friday, July 19, 7:00 pm
Join the Museum of Mathematics as it presents a very hands-on Family Friday event. Wendy Zeichner and Aldo Putigano of OrigamiUSA, the largest origami organization in the country, will take visitors on a tour of the mountains and valleys of paper folding. Make a piece of paper pop up into a frog; interconnect some paper squares and make a magic star; experiment with shape and color and make something beautiful to take home. Through origami, parents and children alike will explore the geometric properties of objects and how a line here and a line there can result in…a lion here and a lion there. For further information and to register, visit
origami.momath.org.
Math Encounters: The Cosmic Distance Ladder
Wednesday, August 7, 4:00 pm or 7:00 pm
Join Fields Medalist and UCLA professor Terry Tao as he demonstrates how basic math can be used to estimate distances that are out of this world. For further information and to register, visit
mathencounters.org.
Elastegrities: How to Make Them! (And What They Are)
Friday, August 23, 7:00 pm
When architecture professor Lefteris Pavlides first wove a rigid paper diamond
35 years ago, it inspired him to create a variety of shapes out of both rigid and elastic parts. These shapes have an unusual property: when squeezed, they compress into solid structures, but when released, they spring back to their original form. The internal elastic forces maintain the shape's integrity, thus the name “elastegrity.” Join MoMath at the latest installment of its popular Family Friday series on August 23, when Professor Pavlides will teach visitors how to fold and weave paper into rigid crystals and shapeshifting elastegrities. Come learn how to make miniature marvels out of paper and math! For further information and to register, visit
elastegrities.momath.org.
Math Encounters: A Surreptitious Sequence—the Catalan Numbers
Wednesday, September 4, 4:00 pm or 7:00 pm
Join mathematician Alissa Crans, recent Director of Educational and Outreach Activities at MSRI and current Loyola Marymount Associate Professor, as she explores some of the many ways in which the mysterious Catalan numbers are hidden throughout mathematics. For further information and to register, visit
mathencounters.org.
