Celebration of Mind, in honor of Martin Gardner
Saturday, October 25, all day
Celebrate Martin Gardner’s 100th birthday with a very special Celebration of Mind event. All day at MoMath, join us in a wide range of hands-on mathematical activities inspired by Gardner’s work, including optical-illusion Alice in Wonderland papercraft, surprising card tricks, and one-cut paper puzzles. In addition, this year we are also building a Level 3 Menger Sponge fractal out of business cards, as part of the worldwide MegaMenger.com Level 4 Menger Sponge project. Help us build the world’s largest distributed origami fractal! All activities are free with MoMath admission.
Math Encounters: "Cooking Up Math” with Mercedes Molina

Get your creative juices flowing! Mathematician and culinary enthusiast Mercedes Molina provides a recipe for fun as she explores the artistry and inspiration common to two of her favorite pursuits: math and cooking. Family Fridays at MoMath presented by Time Warner Cable: "Bead Geometry”

Where's the math in beadwork? A bead is anything with a hole, its hole is just a cylinder, and the axis of that cylinder is a line segment. So, a bead is just a line segment with colorful stuff around it, and those line segments can build geometric structures. Come along as mathematical artist Gwen Fisher pulls us into her world of beaded cubes and cuboctahedrons. And once we're there, new challenges involving color and symmetry await, as we explore different patterns to weave into our creations. A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Formula

Join MoMath for a night of laughs as Matt Parker, stand-up comedian and mathematician, sets out to show us the world of math through the lens of humor and real-life scenarios. Matt writes about math for The Guardian and The Telegraph in London, and often contributes to the BBC. Matt also performs regularly as a stand-up comic using math games and humor in front of crowds of thousands. Broadway Intersections: the math behind The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime

Turing Tales

It is only a slight exaggeration to say that British mathematician Alan Turing saved the Allies from the Nazis, invented the computer and artificial intelligence, and anticipated gay liberation by decades — all before his suicide at age forty-one. Now, mathematician Andrew Hodges, author of the Turing biography that inspired the major motion picture, arrives at MoMath to share his stories about Turing. From his revolutionary idea that laid the foundation for the modern computer, to his leading role in breaking the German Enigma ciphers during World War II, and finally to his tragic ending, Alan Turing led an incredible — and in the end, incredibly tragic — life. Math Encounters: "Shaping Surfaces” with Chaim Goodman-Strauss

Nature melds living surfaces from the geometry of curvature. Corals, leaves, lichens — even membranes and ears — all living surfaces are shaped through exquisite control over this intrinsic geometry, even as those surfaces flex, twist, and grow. Explore fundamental topological principles with mathematician Chaim Goodman-Strauss, and see the surprising beauty and simplicity of the underlying principles that control the geometry of surfaces. Even if you already enjoy doing mathematical puzzles, knowing a few new tricks can help you solve the tough ones and enjoy them all a bit more. Dartmouth College professor, mathematician, and puzzle expert Peter Winkler will share some tips and techniques, then lead the group in an effort to hammer out solutions to some intriguing puzzles. Dimensions Puzzle Hunt: Escape the Museum!

In collaboration with Escape the Room NYC, MoMath invites you to a special Dimensions Puzzle Hunt on 12/13/14. Venture deep into the heart of the National Museum of Mathematics on this auspicious day, the last sequential calendar date of the 21st century. But, beware! To return, you will need to solve puzzles and use math to illuminate your way before the portal closes forever. Try to escape the Museum — if you can! Stay tuned for more details. The swarm is here! MoMath is excited to announce the debut of its new blockbuster exhibit, Robot Swarm. Exploiting cutting-edge new developments in motion control and positioning systems, this exhibit will be the first of its kind in the nation. Interact with dozens of small, glowing robots who react to your presence and interact with each other, generating lifelike behavior from simple mathematical rules. They know where you are!

PolyPals: Bring your toddlers and preschoolers to MoMath for weekly fun!

PolyPals, MoMath's Tuesday afternoon program for pre-K children, offers our littlest mathematicians the opportunity to listen to math-themed stories and have fun exploring the concepts behind them. Led by MoMath's skilled educational staff, toddlers and preschoolers participate in songs, stories, and activities tied to a different theme each week. Patterns, shapes, numbers, and more – PolyPals is a great way to enrich your child's day with mathematical inspiration. Expansions: MoMath’s innovative program to engage and challenge NYC’s brightest math students

Reinvent math class with Expansions, MoMath's after-school gifted program. Featuring programs for all mathematically gifted students currently enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade, the Expansions workshops are designed and delivered by MoMath's educational team to challenge and inspire students, and to broaden their mathematical horizons. With topics ranging from fractals to cellular automata, these afternoon sessions provide an opportunity for participants to learn advanced and fascinating topics not included in the standard K-12 curriculum. Plus, your child can benefit from enjoying math together with small groups of talented and focused young scholars. Expansions offers
