Turing Tales

: Author Andrew Hodges talks about the book that inspired the blockbuster new movie
Monday, December 1, 7:00 pm

It is only a slight exaggeration to say that British mathematician Alan Turing saved the Allies from the Nazis, invented the computer and artificial intelligence, and anticipated gay liberation by decades — all before his suicide at age 41.  Now, mathematician Andrew Hodges, author of the Turing biography that inspired the major motion picture, arrives at MoMath to share his stories about Turing.  From his revolutionary idea that laid the foundation for the modern computer, to his leading role in breaking the German Enigma ciphers during World War II, and finally to his tragic ending, Alan Turing led an incredible — and in the end, incredibly tragic — life.  Don’t miss this inside view into the inner and outer drama of Alan Turing’s life and achievements.  Register at turingtales.momath.org.

Math Encounters: "Shaping Surfaces” with Chaim Goodman-Strauss

Wednesday, December 3, 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm

Nature melds living surfaces from the geometry of curvature.  Corals, leaves, lichens — even membranes and ears — all living surfaces are shaped through exquisite control over this intrinsic geometry, even as those surfaces flex, twist, and grow.  Explore fundamental topological principles with mathematician Chaim Goodman-Strauss, and see the surprising beauty and simplicity of the underlying principles that control the geometry of surfaces.  Refreshments follow the afternoon presentation of Math Encounters; arrive by 6:30 pm for refreshments preceding the evening presentation. Special introduction by John Conway, prizewinning Princeton University mathematician and inventor of the cellular automaton Game of Life.  Register at mathencounters.org.

2014 Rosenthal Prize award presentation
Friday, December 5, 6:30 pm

Before Family Fridays begins, one exceptional middle school math teacher will receive the Rosenthal Prize for Innovation in Math Teaching.  Be there when Saul Rosenthal presents the $25,000 award to the winning teacher — and if you know a math teacher with a hands-on, engaging classroom activity, let them know that the application process for the 2015 Rosenthal Prize opens on December 1 at rosenthalprize.momath.org.

Family Fridays at MoMath presented by Time Warner Cable: "Mathematical Puzzles — and the 'Tricks' You Need to Solve Them”
Friday, December 5, 6:30 pm

Even if you already enjoy doing mathematical puzzles, knowing a few new tricks can help you solve the tough ones and enjoy them all a bit more.  Dartmouth College professor, mathematician, and puzzle expert Peter Winkler will share some tips and techniques, and then lead the group in an effort to hammer out solutions to some intriguing puzzles.  Suggested for ages 12 and up.  This presentation is free to attendees, as part of Time Warner Cable's Connect a Million Minds campaign.  For more information and to register, visit familyfridays.momath.org.

World premiere of Matthew Brand's Luminaries in Composite: the gallery at MoMath
Saturday, December 6, 6:00 pm

If you like the Light Grooves exhibit at MoMath, you’ll love the latest gallery show featuring the newest work of artist, inventor, and visionary Matthew Brand.  Evoking figures from ancient Egypt to the medieval Silk Road to modern casinos, light artist Matt Brand has captured some of history’s most intriguing thinkers. The Composite gallery at the National Museum of Mathematics will feature the world’s first large-scale show of lumography — smooth, water-clear lenses whose undulating surfaces rearrange light beams into ghostly morphing pictures. Many years in development, Brand’s marriage of sand castle mathematics and swimming pool optics will premiere at 6 pm on December 6.  For more information and to register for the opening reception, visit luminaries.momath.org.

Broadway Intersections: The Math Behind The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time
Monday, December 8, 6:30 pm

Broadway’s newest hit brings mathematics to the stage!  Join actor Alex Sharp (“Christopher”) and MoMath founder Glen Whitney as they take you through some of the scenes in which math plays a starring role.  See how math helps drive the dramatic development of the characters, and enjoy a Q&A with one of Broadway’s bright new stars.  Space is limited for this event, so register soon at curious.momath.org

Special offer: See the show on Broadway with MoMath on December 2, 2014 at 7 pm for $99 per seat, or December 6, 2014 at 2 pm for $109 per seat.  Limited seats available; all seats will be in the orchestra section.  This offer is only available to Broadway Intersections attendees, so be sure to register at curious.momath.org.  Email functions@momath.org for more information and to reserve seats.

Take a journey into the wonder of mathematical form and biomimicry, and brighten up winter by creating your own beautiful lamp using iterative paper folding techniques.  Enjoy a math-maker mash-up of elementary symmetries, crystallography, origami, and light, while learning about structure, strength, stability, and translations — an aesthetic experience not to be missed!  After the workshop, illuminate mathematics by taking your lamp home.  Register at wonderlamp.momath.org.

Family Fridays at MoMath presented by Time Warner Cable: "Creature Cuts”
Friday, January 16, 6:30 pm

Using a sharp eye and a sharp tool, create an Escher-like tessellation of lizards or other creatures to decorate your home.  Computer science and math instructor Kevin Lee demonstrates how removing the negative space from a vinyl sticker creates a two-color design similar to the work of M. C. Escher.  Learn about the math of symmetry and tessellations, and take home your very own 10” x 10” tessellation window sticker.  This presentation is free to attendees, as part of Time Warner Cable's Connect a Million Minds campaign.  For more information and to register, visit familyfridays.momath.org.
