Matthew Brand's Luminaries at Composite, the gallery at MoMath
Through March 2015
If you like the Light Grooves exhibit at MoMath, you’ll love this gallery show featuring the newest work of light artist, inventor, and visionary Matthew Brand. Evoking figures from ancient Egypt to the medieval Silk Road to modern casinos, Brand has captured some of history’s most intriguing thinkers. Visit Composite, the gallery at MoMath, to discover the world’s first large-scale show of lumography — smooth, water-clear lenses whose undulating surfaces rearrange light beams into ghostly morphing pictures. Many years in development, Brand’s marriage of sand castle mathematics and swimming pool optics runs through March 2015. Entry is included with Museum
admission.

Math Encounters: “Poetry, Drumming, and Mathematics” with 2014 Fields Medalist Manjul Bhargava
Wednesday, March 4, 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm
Did you know that many of the modern mathematical tools used in probability and combinatorics — and applied in varied technologies such as those on NASA space missions — originated in problems encountered by linguists and musicians thousands of years ago? Princeton University Professor and 2014 Fields Medalist Manjul Bhargava looks at some of these ancient, poetic problems — and their remarkable solutions through the ages — to reveal much about the nature of human thought and the origins of mathematics. Refreshments follow the afternoon presentation of Math Encounters; arrive by 6:30 pm for refreshments preceding the evening presentation. Register at mathencounters.org.

The Mathematics of Being Human
Sunday, March 8, 6:30 pm
Battle lines are drawn between mathematics and the humanities when English professor Naomi Kessler and mathematician Mike Pearson are compelled to co-teach a course at a university bent on promoting interdisciplinarity. They tussle over everything: from the value of ‘nothing’ in King Lear, to the fractal nature of cauliflower, to the relevance of non-Euclidean geometry in poetry. Will they be able to give their beleaguered students a glimpse of synthesis or will their insularity prove impossible to surmount? The fireworks fly in this new play written by the University of Maryland Baltimore County's Michele Osherow (English professor and dramaturg for Washington DC's Folger Theatre) and Manil
Suri (mathematics professor and author of "The Death of Vishnu"), and directed by Alan Kreizenbeck. This staged reading will be followed by a talk-back, so make sure to bring your thinking cap. See more and register at human.momath.org.
Family Fridays at MoMath presented by Time Warner Cable: “Cat & Mouse Games”
Friday, March 13, 6:30 pm
A cat chases a mouse on a grid. Can the cat catch the mouse? Sometimes yes… sometimes no! Play some games and see when you can escape — then find out if math is on the side of the cat, or the mouse! Dan Zaharopol, Executive Director of the Art of Problem Solving Foundation, guides us through the strategy of a simple game as viewed through the lens of mathematics. This presentation is free to attendees, as part of Time Warner Cable's Connect a Million Minds campaign. For more information and to register, visit familyfridays.momath.org.
Celebrate the Pi Day of the Century with MoMath!
Saturday, March 14
Pi is more fun when it's shared! Enjoy a day full of special pi-related activities at MoMath, from a scavenger hunt through the exhibits to circular tic-tac-toe and pi puzzles — all in honor of the ultimate Pi Day, 3/14/15. You can make pi personal by finding a unique number sequence in its infinite digits, and make pi even more delicious by estimating it using candy! Plus, be there to hear the winning entries from MoMath's Pi Day competition. And watch for additional information about more special pi events as we count down on 3/14/15 at 9:26 am and again at 9:26 pm, including pi, circles of light, hot chocolate, and pie!
MoMath Winton Power Series: “Dimension: A Geometric and Topological View” with 2014 Breakthrough Prize Winner Simon Donaldson
Sunday, March 22, 5:30 pm
Simon Donaldson will illuminate phenomena in the study of mathematical manifolds that depend crucially on dimension. Going back to the mid-20th century, the initial focus of the presentation will be on the ideas of algebraic and geometric "intersection numbers" and the fundamental connections between them that hold in high dimensions. The story will continue through the late 20th century and beyond, when contrary phenomena in low dimensions were detected, but still not thoroughly understood. Don't miss your opportunity to hear from Simon Donaldson, one of only five winners of the $3 million Breakthrough Prize — the most substantial prize in all of mathematics. This presentation will be followed
by a question and answer session and an informal reception. Register at powerseries.momath.org.

Math Encounters: “A Mathematician Reads the Newspaper (and Its Descendants)” with John Allen Paulos
Wednesday, April 1, 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm
Investigate the mathematical angles of news stories and debunk popular myths and fallacies with mathematician, author, and columnist John Allen Paulos. Join fellow coffee-drinkers, strap-hangers, policy-makers, gossip-mongers, bargain-hunters, trend-setters, and others who can't get along without their daily news, and discover an oblique, yet revealing, slant on the traditional Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How of the journalist's craft. Refreshments follow the afternoon presentation of Math Encounters; arrive by 6:30 pm for refreshments preceding the evening presentation. Register at mathencounters.org.
Family Fridays at MoMath presented by Time Warner Cable: "Math Runes: Art with Functions”
Friday, April 10, 6:30 pm
Create string art that demonstrates functions! Mathematician and award-winning artist Mike Naylor returns to MoMath to share Math Runes, the app he designed to explore how multiplication in different mod systems can create amazing designs. Choose your favorite design using Math Runes, then thread a beautiful pattern to turn your design into a physical piece of art. See just how fascinating simple operations like multiplication can be! This presentation is free to attendees, as part of Time Warner Cable's Connect a Million Minds campaign. For more information and to register, visit familyfridays.momath.org.

Human Equations: A Journey from Mathematics to Shakespeare
Sunday, April 19
, 12:00 pm
Math meets art in this first time three-part display of Man Ray's surrealistic-inflected Shakespearean Equations series, side by side with the original geometric models that inspired the paintings, plus the inventive photographs of these mathematical forms made by Man Ray in Paris in the 1930s. Don't miss this unique opportunity to join MoMath on a private tour of the exhibition, learning firsthand how art and math intersect in this display of over 100 pieces, including a custom version of MoMath's own Formula Morph exhibit, designed especially for this unique show. As a special bonus, join MoMath's President and founder, Glen Whitney, for brunch before the tour, and hear the mathematical
backstory of the Phillips Collection's latest exhibit. For more information and to register, visit manray.momath.org.
Weird Ways to Work With Pi
Thursday, June 4, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm
Many a mathematical scholar has contemplated the meaning and mystery of the number pi: the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. But who says the concept of pi should apply only to circles? What is pi for a square? What is pi for a right triangle? What interesting non-circular problems can be solved with non-circular pi-values? This professional development workshop will explore and unite all sorts of ideas from the middle school and high school curriculum, develop agile thinking and problem-solving skills, and connect beautifully with content and practices with the Common Core. See more and register at pd.momath.org.
