Family Fridays at MoMath presented by Time Warner Cable: "Popping Up with Robert Sabuda!”

Friday, May 1, 6:30 pm

Join New York Times best-selling and award-winning pop-up book creator Robert Sabuda as he shares the process of creating his magical three-dimensional books.  He’ll also lead a very special workshop to get everyone busy creating pop-ups.  Learn a variety of simple techniques that can be used for making cards, invitations and — with a little practice and imagination — your very own book!  This presentation is free to attendees, as part of Time Warner Cable's Connect a Million Minds campaign.  For more information and to register, visit familyfridays.momath.org.

Math Encounters: “Swarm Math: From wasps and wings to bots and bits” with James McLurkin

Wednesday, May 6, 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm

Get under the hood of MoMath’s hot new Robot Swarm exhibit with roboticist James McLurkin.  From the first naturally occurring distributed algorithms 120 million years ago to the automated exploration and search-and-rescue missions of today, learn how simple rules followed by individuals can result in complex group behaviors, and how tasks like warehouse fulfillment and even building construction can sometimes be handled better by groups of robots than by people!  Refreshments follow the afternoon presentation of Math Encounters; arrive by 6:30 pm for refreshments preceding the evening presentation.  Register at mathencounters.org.

Spacellation at the Geek Street Fair
Thursday, May 28, 12:00 pm – 6:00 pm
Note that this program takes place at Gansevoort Plaza in the Meatpacking District

Hang out with MoMath at the Geek Street Fair, hosted by Google!  If you missed Spacellation, the giant collaborative coat hanger construction that debuted during the National Math Festival in DC, now's your chance to dive in hands-first.  Help MoMath turn ordinary household objects into extraordinary mathematical art; if you stick around until 6 pm, you just might get a piece of mathematical artwork to take home with you!

Math Encounters: “Symmetry, Ornaments, and Computers” with Jürgen Richter-Gebert

Wednesday, June 3, 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm

Repetitive ornamental patterns are an omnipresent part of human culture.  Technology can serve as a versatile link between what is drawn (art) and how it repeats (mathematics), allowing one to create, analyze, deform, and animate such ornamental patterns.  Can just one finger stroke be used to create exciting pavement structures?  Is there a way to involve people from all over the world in the creation of ornamental patterns?  Join professor and interactive mathematics expert Jürgen Richter-Gebert, creator of the interactive geometry software Cinderella and the app iOrnament, as he uses live demonstrations and animations to decorate the evening.  Refreshments follow the afternoon presentation of Math Encounters; arrive by 6:30 pm for refreshments preceding the evening presentation.  Register at mathencounters.org.

Teacher Professional Development workshop with international expert Jim Tanton: Weird Ways to Work With Pi

Thursday, June 4, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm
Many a mathematical scholar has contemplated the meaning and mystery of the number pi: the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter.  But who says the concept of pi should apply only to circles?  What is pi for a square?  What is pi for a right triangle?  What interesting non-circular problems can be solved with non-circular pi-values?  This professional development workshop, led by MAA ambassador Jim Tanton, will explore and unite all sorts of ideas from the middle school and high school curriculum, develop agile thinking and problem-solving skills, and connect beautifully with content and practices with the Common Core.  See more and register at pd.momath.org.

Family Fridays at MoMath presented by Time Warner Cable: "Finding Freaky Fixed Points”

Friday, June 5, 6:30 pm

When two pieces of paper are stacked one atop the other, each point on the top piece sits directly above its matching point on the bottom piece.  Now, crumple the top piece of paper into a ball and throw it back onto the bottom piece.  Astoundingly, there is sure to still be at least one point in that top crumpled piece sitting directly above its matching point on the bottom!  Or, take two maps of the U.S., one smaller than the other.  Toss the small map somewhere onto the large map and you’ll be sure to find one point in the U.S. in exactly the same spot on both maps.  And watch out when you stir your morning drink – in an ideal mathematical world, at least one point of liquid is sure to return to exactly the same location where it was before stirring!  Join Jim Tanton and have fun playing with clever “ABC triangles” to find these freaky fixed points.  This presentation is free to attendees, as part of Time Warner Cable's Connect a Million Minds campaign.  For more information and to register, visit familyfridays.momath.org.

Unbounded: An Evening at MoMath — Math of the Rainbow!

Friday, June 12, 7:30 pm
21+ (ID required)

Delve into a whole spectrum of mathematics at the next Unbounded, MoMath's adult-only night at the Museum!  Reflect, refract, and rediscover the rainbow by learning the math behind it.  Then, get creative with Julia's Stars, a colorful, collaborative construction of a giant fractal using rainbow LEDs.  This edition of Unbounded will also be held in honor of NYC Pride month!  Celebrate the contributions of the LGBT+ community to math and science, all while enjoying good food, good drinks, and good company.  21+ (ID required).  One free drink included with admission.  Register at unbounded.momath.org.

PolyPals: Bring your toddlers and preschoolers to MoMath for weekly fun!
Now on Saturday mornings (Ages 2-5)

PolyPals, MoMath's program for pre-K children, offers our littlest mathematicians the opportunity to listen to math-themed stories and have fun exploring the concepts behind them.  Led by MoMath's skilled educational staff, toddlers and preschoolers participate in songs, stories, and activities tied to a different theme each week.  Patterns, shapes, numbers, and more – PolyPals is a great way to enrich your child's day with mathematical inspiration.  For further information and to register, visit polypals.momath.org.

Expansions: MoMath’s innovative program to engage and challenge NYC’s brightest math students

Tuesday afternoons (HS students); Thursday afternoons (K-8, separated by level)

Reinvent math class with Expansions, MoMath's after-school gifted program.  Featuring programs for all mathematically gifted students currently enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade, Expansions workshops are designed and delivered by MoMath's educational team to challenge and inspire students, and to broaden their mathematical horizons.  With topics ranging from fractals to cellular automata, these afternoon sessions provide an opportunity for participants to learn advanced and fascinating topics not included in the standard K-12 curriculum.  Plus, your child can benefit from enjoying math together with small groups of talented and focused young scholars.  Expansions offers sessions at five levels, which are differentiated by mathematical experience rather than age.  Admission is by application only.  For more information and to apply, visit expansions.momath.org.

Do you have a great idea for a mathematical art show?  Send it to MoMath!  MoMath is seeking proposals for a show in the Composite gallery, to begin approximately one year from now.  Applications are open here: applycomposite.momath.org.
