[MoMath] 2015 Nov-Dec Upcoming Events

Dear MoMath friends,

Connect the dots at MoMath!  What does chaos have to do with weather patterns, or voting have to do with dark matter?  What about the connections between math and music, or the strategic depths of kids' games?  Bring the pieces together with an all-new lineup of events.

New: Print your own Mathaeneum designed sculpture!  Turn your mathematical designs into three-dimensional reality.  Email additions@momath.org for more information.

Party Under Construction: the 2015 MoMath Gala

Tuesday, October 27, 6:00 pm

Join MoMath for an elegant evening honoring Santiago Calatrava, architect of Manhattan's stunning new building, the World Trade Center Transportation Hub (the "Oculus").  With good food, drink, and conviviality, celebrate Calatrava's sweeping designs and the way in which mathematics and its structures have inspired and enhanced the beauty and performance — the form and foundation — of the world we have built around us.  Just a few seats left: register now at gala.momath.org.

Bring MoMath to you!  MM2GO free teacher preview
Thursday, October 29, 5:15 pm – 6:30 pm

Educators: look before you book!  Come to MoMath for a free preview of the Math Midway 2 Go, MoMath’s traveling exhibit. Design a thrilling roller coaster, explore the world of numbers, morph your face with math, and more. Have questions?  Talk face-to-face with one of MoMath's educators about the MM2GO exhibits.  Let us show you how MM2GO can engage your students!  Register now at mm2gopreview.momath.org.

Probability Play: Teacher Professional Development

Tuesday, November 3, 9:30 am — 4:00 pm

Join MoMath's Chief of Mathematics Nick Rauh and 2015 Rosenthal Prize winner Ralph Pantozzi for a two-part workshop featuring activities that explore probability through the lens of experimentation.  In the morning, focus on the use of simulations to model populations, random data, and counterintuitive puzzles while participating in an engaging mathematical discussion.  In the afternoon, experience an activity on random walks and a discussion of the elegant mathematics behind them.  These activities will touch on many of the points outlined in the Common Core standards for teaching probability and statistics.  This workshop is recommended for middle school and early high school teachers, or for anyone who just wants to see a different side of statistics.  Register at fall2015pd.momath.org.

Math Encounters: “Chaos in the Climate” with Gavin A. Schmidt
Wednesday, November 4, 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm

How do we deal with the chaotic climate system?  What do models of chaos look like, and why are mathematical models so unreasonably effective, even though they are far from perfect?  Dr. Gavin A. Schmidt, Director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, will help us understand why it’s possible to make predictions, even when they involve seemingly unpredictable systems.  Refreshments follow the afternoon presentation of Math Encounters; arrive by 6:30 pm for refreshments preceding the evening presentation.  Register at mathencounters.org.

Mastering Dots and Boxes

Wednesday, November 11, 6:30 pm

The familiar pencil-and-paper game "Dots and Boxes" hides astounding strategic complexity when played on grids larger than a handful of boxes.  Join Elwyn Berlekamp, a recognized world authority on strategic play, as he reveals the surprising depth in this seemingly simple children's game. Berlekamp will show us subtle tactics, connections with other games, and the state of the art in the study of Dots and Boxes.  Plus, you are likely to learn how you and your family can beat the neighbors in this perennially-loved pastime.  Learn more and register at dotsboxes.momath.org.

Family Fridays at MoMath presented by Time Warner Cable: “Let's Box!”

Friday, November 13, 6:30 pm

The Japanese art of origami (paper-folding) is centuries old, but the genre of modular origami or geometric construction using congruent units is relatively recent.  By examining the roles of reflection symmetry versus rotation symmetry in paper folding, simple but clever box forms will be produced – just in time for the holiday season!  And by using newly folded boxes as modules, an even bigger surprise awaits.  This presentation is free to attendees, as part of Time Warner Cable's Connect a Million Minds campaign.  For more information and to register, visit familyfridays.momath.org.

The Open Set: A Night of Original Musical Performance

Thursday, November 19, 7:00 pm

Add a little math to your music!  We asked mathemusicians around the world to send us their best original mathematical lyrics or compositions.  Now, you can hear the winners at a special night of musical performance.  Settle in for an evening of clever lyrics and fun tunes, including exciting performances from three special guests!  If you're inspired, a few spaces will also be available for brave members of the audience to perform on the spot.  Learn more and register at mathmusic.momath.org.

Math Encounters: “Mystery of the Masses” with Donald Saari

Wednesday, December 2, 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm

Those puzzling voting paradoxes demonstrate a problem: the voting systems we use may not result in the election of the most favored candidate.  A surprising fact is that using mathematics to understand why these voting anomalies arise also creates a framework for examining other mysteries, including the question of dark matter.  Explore the power of mathematics as Donald Saari challenges received wisdom about the very nature of our universe.  Refreshments follow the afternoon presentation of Math Encounters; arrive by 6:30 pm for refreshments preceding the evening presentation.  Register at mathencounters.org.

Family Fridays at MoMath presented by Time Warner Cable: “Suspended Geometry”

Friday, December 11, 6:30 pm

Tensegrity is a way of building things that lets you design mind-bending three-dimensional structures with support beams that mutually suspend each other with only the help of rope or wire.  Build up from the basics and stretch your geometric intuition to create fascinating symmetric forms. This hands-on activity won two ribbons at the 2014 Maker Faire, and it might just change the way you think about structure.  This presentation is free to attendees, as part of Time Warner Cable's Connect a Million Minds campaign.  For more information and to register, visit familyfridays.momath.org.

Winter Wonderlamp returns!

Sunday, December 13 – Tuesday, December 15

Winter's looking brighter already!  Fold together symmetry, origami, light, stability, translations and more as last year's popular geometric lamp-making activity returns for a full three days of possibilities.

  • Families: Choose from two upcoming workshops on Sunday, December 13!  Use patience and iterative folding techniques to create stunning paper lamps to take home.
  • Teachers: Bring a Wonderlamp workshop to your school, or attend teacher training workshops to learn how to bring this project to your classes.

Learn more and register at wonderlamp.momath.org.

The Harmonic Series: Concerts & Conversations with MoMath

Wednesday, December 16, 7:00 pm

Please note that this event will take place at the Engelman Recital Hall in the Baruch Performing Arts Center
Math and music join forces for the Harmonic Series, an exciting new quarterly program presented by MoMath. Hosted by public radio's "Piano Puzzler," Bruce Adolphe, the opening concert will feature Noam Elkies, a mathematician, composer, and the youngest-ever tenured professor at Harvard; and Orli Shaham, an acclaimed pianist and the host of Dial-A-Musician, in conversation and performance.  On Beethoven's birthday, enjoy the best of both worlds as these talented minds play live music and participate in an ongoing discussion about the artistic and logical intersections of these two disciplines.  This event will be followed by a wine and cheese reception.  Register for this performance, or sign up now for all four quarterly performances at a special introductory rate, at harmonic.momath.org.

Solstice Stars
Tuesday, December 22

Please note that this event will take place at the Flatiron North Plaza (E 23rd St. between Broadway and 5th Ave.)
If you liked Pythagorize the Flatiron or the Pi Day of the Century, join MoMath for another giant group celebration. Commemorate the Winter Solstice with math and light as we create a stunning display that celebrates the sun, geometry, and our local community.  This special mathematical celebration will be part of the 23 Days of Flatiron Cheer.  Watch for more details and register at solstice.momath.org.

Expansions: MoMath’s innovative program to engage and challenge NYC’s brightest math students

Thursday afternoons (K-12, separated by level)

Reinvent math class with Expansions, MoMath's afternoon gifted program.  Featuring programs for all mathematically gifted students currently enrolled in kindergarten through 8th grade, Expansions workshops are designed and delivered by MoMath's educational team to challenge and inspire students, and to broaden their mathematical horizons.  With topics ranging from fractals to cellular automata, these afternoon sessions provide an opportunity for participants to learn advanced and fascinating topics not included in the standard K-12 curriculum.  Plus, your child can benefit from enjoying math together with small groups of talented and focused young scholars.

Expansions offers sessions at several levels, which are differentiated by mathematical experience rather than age.  Admission is by application only.  To learn more and submit an application, visit expansions.momath.orgNote:  Expansions is expanding!  If you are interested in Tuesday or high school sessions of Expansions, email expansions@momath.org.
