MoMath March – April 2023 Upcoming Events
Dear MoMath friends,
Leave the winter cold behind and spend some time in a warm and welcoming place! Start by joining us for the exciting Finals Round of the MoMath Masters, followed by the Aftermath, an afterparty featuring catered snacks, drinks for purchase, music spun by DJ Emille, and dancing on the nation’s only Voronoi dance floor (complimentary admission for the first 100 people, but you must register in advance). Then, march into March with a full suite of activities both in person and online. Take advantage of two opportunities to visit for free during the popular Free Play program, learn about sports analytics and the math of sports, take in
some amazing fractal beauty generated using math, and meet one of the master-math-minds behind the Pixar movie Brave. Little ones can experience a wild story hour, middle school groups can register for the MoMathlon tournaments, and adults can enjoy a night of games at Equilibrium. Plus, everyone, young or old and near or far, can join in the fun for Folding Fridays and Krazy Kahoot.
The Museum is open from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm ET, seven days a week, 364 days a year (closed for Thanksgiving Day). The Museum closes at 2:30 pm ET once a month for Math Encounters, typically on the first or second Wednesday of the month; however, in April MoMath will close on the first Tuesday of the month. Occasionally, the Museum may close for special events. This Tuesday, February 28, the Museum will close at 1:30 pm ET for the 2023 MoMath Masters and Aftermath.

Volumes, the MoMath book club: a discussion of Mathematics for Human Flourishing with author Francis Su (online)
Tuesday, March 1 at 7:00 pm ET
Join Distinguished Visiting Professor Tim Chartier and author Francis Su for an engaging discussion of Mathematics for Human Flourishing. Winner of the Mathematical Association of America’s 2021 Euler Book Prize, the book is an inclusive vision of mathematics — its beauty, its humanity, and its power to build virtues that help us all flourish. In this profound book, written for a wide audience but especially for those disenchanted by their past experiences, an award‑winning mathematician and educator weaves together parables, puzzles, and personal reflections to show how mathematics meets basic human desires — such as for play, beauty, freedom, justice, and love — and cultivates virtues essential
for human flourishing. These desires and virtues, and the stories told here, reveal how mathematics is intimately tied to being human. Learn more and register at volumes.momath.org.

Free! Math Encounters: “Halving Your Cake: The Trials and Tribulations of Fair Division” ” featuring Deanna Haunsperger (in person)
Tuesday, April 4 at 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm ET
Here’s a problem as old as humanity: given a resource to be shared (water land, cake), how can it be shared fairly among several people? The answer, in the case of just two people, is simple and ancient and known to every five-year-old with a sibling: I cut, you choose. Things get much more interesting and challenging if one has more than one sibling. How do we make fair divisions? Join Deanna Haunsperger, Professor of Mathematics, Carleton College, for this tasty exploration of sharing. Special introduction by Tim Chartier, Distinguished Visiting Professor for the Public Dissemination of Mathematics, National Museum of Mathematics. Math Encounters is MoMath’s popular free public
presentation series celebrating the spectacular world of mathematics, produced with support from the Simons Foundation. Please note that this Math Encounters presentation will be held on a Tuesday, not on a regularly scheduled Wednesday. Learn more and register for free at mathencounters.momath.org.

Volumes, MoMath’s book club: a discussion of Humble Pi with author Matt Parker (online)
Tuesday, May 2 at 6:30 pm ET
Join Distinguished Visiting Professor Tim Chartier and author Matt Parker for an engaging discussion of Humble Pi: When Math Goes Wrong in the Real World. Our whole world is built on math, from the code running a website to the equations enabling the design of skyscrapers and bridges. Most of the time, this math works quietly behind the scenes… until it doesn’t. All sorts of seemingly innocuous mathematical mistakes can have significant consequences. Math is easy to ignore until a misplaced decimal point upends the stock market. Exploring and explaining a litany of glitches, near misses, and mathematical mishaps involving the internet, big data, elections, street signs, lotteries, the Roman Empire,
and an Olympic team, Matt Parker uncovers the bizarre ways math trips us up, and what this reveals about its essential place in our world. Registration coming soon to volumes.momath.org.
