Winning Rosenthal Prize activities

Are you an educator who believes that curiosity, inquiry, and experiment are essential parts of learning mathematics?  Are you interested in teaching engaging, hands-on lessons that leave middle grade students excited and interested in learning more mathematics?  Are you committed to deepening your understanding and use of innovations in mathematics, instructional practices, and mathematics outreach?

This summer, the National Museum of Mathematics is looking for you!

Over the last ten years, through the Rosenthal Prize for Innovation and Inspiration in Math Teaching, teachers from around the world have shared original and replicable lessons for students in grades four through eight.  These lessons are exemplars of what joyful, engaging, and memorable math learning can look like in the classroom.

MoMath will bring together a cohort of educators to:

  • take an in-depth look at the mathematical content and pedagogy of Rosenthal Prize lessons and how the lessons connect to national standards for the learning of mathematics.
  • develop plans to implement these lessons in their local schools
  • create ideas for new lessons inspired by the goals of the Rosenthal Prize
  • learn new ways to promote mathematics learning in schools and communities
  • experience the wonders of the Museum and see what goes into making interactive math exhibits and programs

Every two months during the school year, participants will meet remotely as a cohort.  During these remote sessions, MoMath will support participants’ efforts to implement Rosenthal Prize lessons with students and share the lessons with other teachers.  Participants will record their implementation of a Rosenthal Prize lesson to share with others during these meetings.

The Rosenthal Institute is designed to support participants in engaging with a broad and diverse audience in their home communities.  Participants will also receive ongoing guidance regarding how to share the lessons at local, state, regional, and national meetings.  Throughout the year, participants will learn from experts in mathematics, pedagogy, and outreach.

If accepted to the program, participants’ expenses for travel and lodging to attend the 2025 Rosenthal Prize Summer Institute in New York City (hosted at the National Museum of Mathematics) will be covered by the Museum.  A $750 stipend will be provided for implementing the lessons, participating in the bimonthly meetings, and sharing the lessons with other educators.

Through its work, the Museum strives to create a more just, tolerant, and enlightened society.  Apply today to see how innovative lessons that stimulate inquiry, spark curiosity, and reveal the wonders of mathematics can be part of that process.
