National Museum of Mathematics and The Wall Street Journal
Launch Weekly Math Quiz –
Varsity Math

MoMath’s Weekly Math Puzzles to Appear Worldwide in Wall Street Journal’s
New “Play” Section in WSJ Weekend beginning Saturday, September 19

New York, NY (September 17, 2015): The National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) and The Wall Street Journal announce the launch of Varsity Math, a weekly math quiz that will appear on the Journal’s digital platforms and on the new “Play” puzzle page within the Review section of WSJ Weekend. The Varsity Math feature will launch on Saturday, September 19.

With content created by MoMath, Varsity Math will feature two math puzzles each week, including logic puzzles, algebraic problems and visual questions of varied difficulty. Each week, one challenging question will be part of a five-week “math relay” – the answers to puzzles from the first four weeks will be required to answer the fifth week.

“We are thrilled to partner with The Wall Street Journal to launch this completely unique math puzzle,” said Glen Whitney, President, MoMath. “Through Varsity Math, we hope to engage math lovers, reach new audiences and reveal the many exciting and entertaining aspects of mathematics to readers throughout the world.”

Varsity Math answers will be posted in print the week following a specific puzzle, and detailed solutions will be posted online (varsity.momath.org and at wsj.com) the same day the short answers are published in print. Answers to the math relay puzzles will be posted online and in print one week after the relay is complete.

“Along with our new daily crossword, our weekly crossword contest and our new package of Saturday games, we are now offering our readers the most ingenious and addictive assortment of puzzles of any newspaper,” said Mike Miller, Senior Deputy Managing Editor, The Wall Street Journal. “We think The Wall Street Journal has the world’s most ambitious readers, and they are going to love trying their wits against MoMath’s brilliant and delightful puzzles.”

“As lifelong math lovers, we at MoMath know that math is fascinating and fun,” explained Cindy Lawrence, Executive Director, MoMath. “Our ambition in creating the Museum was to share that excitement with visitors. Now, through MoMath’s partnership with The Wall Street Journal, we look forward to expanding our mission beyond the museum walls and advancing our ultimate goal of changing perspectives of mathematics on an international scale.”

Varsity Math and the “Play” section are part of WSJ’s recent expansion into the world of puzzles, including a daily crossword puzzle.

All Varsity Math puzzles will be available in print and via the Journal’s digital platforms at wsj.com/puzzles. The puzzles will also appear on varsity.momath.org.
