Con Ed MoMathlon:  Middle School Math Tournaments [7th and 8th grade]
Bronx, Manhattan, Suffolk County, Westchester, and Queens, various dates, March 2014
Every March, the National Museum of Mathematics sponsors middle school math tournaments in and around NYC, culminating in a thrilling tournament of champions held at MoMath itself. These unique tournaments allow budding mathematicians to experience the same special treatment that student athletes receive from their supporters: challenges, teamwork, refreshments, souvenirs, trophies, and memories that will inspire them in high school, college, and beyond. Registration is currently open for MoMathlon events in the Bronx, Queens, Suffolk County, and Westchester; the Manhattan MoMathlon is now full. Please refer to momathlon.momath.org for registration and respective dates. Limited scholarships are available.

PolyPals:  Bring your toddlers and preschoolers to MoMath for afternoon fun!
Tuesday afternoons, Mar. 4, 11, 18 (Ages 2-4)
PolyPals, MoMath's program for pre-K children, has taken off in 2014.  Meeting every Tuesday for four weeks, PolyPals offers our littlest potential mathematicians the opportunity to listen to math-themed stories and have fun exploring the concepts behind them.  Led by MoMath's skilled educational staff, toddlers and pre-schoolers participate in songs, stories, and activities tied to a different theme each week.  Patterns, shapes, numbers, and more—PolyPals is a great way to enrich your child's day with mathematical inspiration. For further information and to register, visit polypals.momath.org.

Expansions:  MoMath’s new program to engage and challenge NYC’s brightest math students
Tuesday afternoons, Mar. 4, 11, 18 (HS students)
Thursday afternoons, Feb. 27, Mar. 6, 13, 20 (K-8, separated by level)

January saw the launch of MoMath's after-school gifted program, Expansions, which is now in its second round.  Featuring programs for all mathematically gifted students currently enrolled in kindergarten through 12th grade, the Expansions workshops are designed and delivered by MoMath's educational team to challenge and inspire students, and broaden their mathematical horizons. With topics ranging from fractals to cellular automata, these afternoon sessions provide an opportunity for participants to learn advanced and fascinating topics not included in the standard K-12 curriculum.  Plus, your child can benefit from enjoying math together with small groups of talented and focused young scholars.

Expansions offers sessions at five levels, which are differentiated by mathematical experience rather than age; entry is by application only. For more information and to apply, visit expansions.momath.org.

Math Encounters:  Modeling the Melt
Wednesday, March 5, 4:00 pm or 7:00 pm
The precipitous loss of Arctic sea ice has far outpaced expert predictions. Come along with Ken Golden, the Indiana Jones of mathematics, as he explores the mathematical underpinnings of this mystery and takes us (via video) on an Antarctic expedition.

March (Mo)Mathness! [adults/high school; middle school with adult]
Thursday, March 13, 7:30 pm
Ever dreamed of being a billionaire? Get ready for 2014 March Madness! Warren Buffett is offering $1 billion for a perfect bracket in this year's men's NCAA Division I basketball tournament, and MoMath is here to help. Join Davidson College's Dr. Tim Chartier at a bracketology workshop designed to get you ready to play. Using computer codes Dr. Chartier and his students have developed, you can hone your mathematical modeling decisions in time for selection Sunday. Only at MoMath can you gain access to these unique codes that have beaten as many as 99.9 percent of competitors in ESPN's bracket challenge, and learn how to make the mathematical decisions that will personalize your bracket. Are you ready to play for the billion?! Register now at marchmathness.momath.org; limited seats available.

Family Friday:  MoMath’s Pi Day Celebration [all ages]
Friday, March 14, 6:00 pm
Celebrate Pi Day at MoMath! Join us on March 14 (that’s 3.14) to celebrate Pi Day, featuring KenKen® inventor Tetsuya Miyamoto and Presidential Teaching Award recipient Dave Masunaga. MoMath’s commemoration of this annual event is dedicated to enjoying the beauty of mathematics and fostering creativity in the expression of mathematical ideas. Space is limited, so be sure to register soon. For further information and to register, visit piday.momath.org.

Unbounded:  An Evening at MoMath [ages 21+]
Thursday, March 27, 7:00 pm
MoMath is pleased to announce its first adult-only evening! Come enjoy a drink, interact with the more than 30 engaging and intriguing exhibits, and meet other members of New York's math-chic community. 21+ (ID required). Details and registration at unbounded.momath.org.

Math Encounters:  The Mathematics of Networks: From the Web to Cancer Genomics
Wednesday, April 2, 4:00 pm or 7:00 pm
Networks with similar properties emerge in an incredible variety of domains—from technological networks like the web to online social networks and even networks in human biology. Jennifer T. Chayes, Distinguished Scientist and Managing Director of Microsoft Research New England and New York City, will explore the mathematics that unifies many of these networks, and the often surprising conclusions that can be drawn from such mathematics.
For further information and to register, visit mathencounters.org

MathematiComics [ages 8-14 with adult]
Sunday, April 6, 2:00 pm
Come play inside the strange and unexpected world of math in art. Internationally known comics artist Marek Bennett will teach children mathematical patterns and tricks to create original mini-comics. No comics experience necessary—if you can draw a circle, two points, and a line segment, you've got yourself an original character. All supplies provided. Families welcome (adults will have fun too!) but space is limited, so register at mathematicomics.momath.org soon.

Senior citizen days at MoMath! [ages 65+]
Every Monday from January 6 through March 31
MoMath is partnering with SD26 to enliven dreary winter afternoons.  From January through March, every Monday is funday for seniors at MoMath.  Start your afternoon with a special lunch deal at SD26, one of the premiere eateries in the neighborhood, then spend the afternoon engaging your brain with exploration of MoMath’s over thirty innovative exhibits.  Buy one, get one:  buy a MoMath admission ticket and bring a friend in for free!  For further information, email seniors@momath.org.
