Love mathematics and books? Looking for a stimulating and fun discussion? Volumes, the MoMath book club, is just the thing for you! This monthly reading group is designed especially for those interested in mathematics and science and how they affect our lives. No prior math or science background is necessary.
Join host Dr. Arthur Benjamin, MoMath’s 2025–2026 Visiting Professor for Public Outreach, for an engaging book club discussion of The Mathematics of Origami with author Joseph O'Rourke.
From pop-up geometry to origami, polyhedra, and beyond, geometry comes vividly to life in this presentation by Joseph O’Rourke, a leading figure in computational geometry. Exploring how mathematicians and computer scientists think about shape, structure, and space, this program offers a fascinating look at the mathematics behind folding, form, and visualization.
Joseph O’Rourke is Olin Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at Smith College, where he also held a joint appointment in mathematics. A specialist in computational geometry, he is the author or co-author of numerous books, including Art Gallery Theorems and Algorithms, Geometric Folding Algorithms, Pop-Up Geometry, and The Mathematics of Origami. He has published widely and received honors including a Guggenheim Fellowship, the NSF Director’s Award for Distinguished Teaching Scholars, and election as an ACM Fellow.
