Art and Math in the Works of M.C. Escher: A Tour through the National Gallery of Art’s M.C. Escher Collection (10:00 am)

David Masunaga and MoMath have made special arrangements with the National Gallery of Art (NGA) to lead participants through masterpieces of its famed M.C. Escher collection, one of the world's largest and most complete collections of his works. The focus will be on Escher’s analytic elements of design, his intuitive geometric sense, and his brilliant printmaking techniques.

Masunaga's connection with Escher stems from studies with his graduate mentor Dr. Arthur Loeb, the first person to bring M.C. Escher to the United States, and his friendship with George Escher, M.C. Escher’s eldest son.  In addition, for many years he has worked closely with the NGA curators, who will give us access to several of the rarest, one-of-a-kind pieces in this vast collection.

The collection is housed in the restricted research/conservation area of the National Gallery East Wing, and is open only by special arrangement.

Brief Bio of David Masunaga
For more than 35 years, David Masunaga has been balancing the full-time demands of the middle and high school mathematics classroom with research and leadership in mathematics and education, including a focus on the relationship between these areas and the visual and performing arts. Masunaga was a director of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and he has given hundreds of public talks on mathematics and mathematics-related areas to both general and technical audiences.
