Join Distinguished Visiting Professor Tim Chartier and special guest Paul Kanyuk for a discussion of WALL·E, Pixar's 2008 animated masterwork about a trash-clearing robot left amid the wreckages of civilization long after humans have left Earth.  At once a philosophical quest into the future of the species and an unlikely love story, WALL·E has been treasured by kids and adults alike since its release.  The discussion will address the mathematical breakthrough by Pixar that allowed for complex crowd scenes and explain how the multiplication principle from combinatorics was behind this advancement.

Paul Kanyuk is a Second Unit and Crowds Technical Supervisor at Pixar.  He is credited on ten Pixar films and specializes in crowd simulation, shading, and rendering.

Please watch WALL·E at your leisure in the days leading up to the event.

Though viewing the film is not required for participation, it is suggested that participants stream the movie independently prior to the event.

This event will NOT be recorded; the only way to see it is to register and attend.
