NATIONAL MUSEUM OF MATHEMATICS AND TWO SIGMA

ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIP TO ADVANCE MATH EDUCATION

Math and Science-Based Investment Company Aims to Advance STEM Education,
Partners with MoMath to Spark Interest in Math

New York, NY (August 4, 2014): The National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) announces that Two Sigma, a technology company that applies a data-driven, scientific approach to investment management, has joined the Museum as a partner. Two Sigma’s support will play an important role in helping MoMath continue its mission to heighten mathematical curiosity among students and the community with fun, engaging and interactive exhibitions.

As the only math museum in North America, MoMath strives to fulfill the incredible demand for hands-on math programming with exhibits and programs that stimulate inquiry, spark curiosity and reveal the wonders of math to all who visit. Since its opening in December 2012, MoMath has attracted over 250,000 visitors, shattering attendance projections.

“MoMath is thrilled to partner with Two Sigma to continue bringing cutting-edge exhibits and diverse programming to New York City’s visitors and residents,” said Glen Whitney, MoMath co-founder and co-executive director. “We are delighted to work with an organization that truly values mathematics professionally, but also understands and appreciates the many fun and exciting aspects of the subject.”

“Math is central to the work of Two Sigma, and we share MoMath’s passion for advancing public understanding of mathematics,” said John Overdeck, co-chairman of Two Sigma. “STEM education is a critical part of the skill sets students and young professionals need to be successful in the workplace and we are pleased to support the organization’s mission.”

Since its founding in 2001, Two Sigma has built a reputation for utilizing technological innovations to consistently deliver value for its clients. Two Sigma’s diverse team includes six international Math Olympiad medalists, the winner of a major Japanese Backgammon Tournament, and the owner of a patent for a best execution analysis system. Overdeck is a two-time winner of the MoMath Masters, MoMath’s exciting math competition for adults.

“Innovative programming is at the heart of MoMath’s mission to make math engaging and fun for families and children of all ages. We are excited to announce our new partnership with Two Sigma and look forward to bringing the love of mathematics to an even broader audience,” said Cindy Lawrence, who joined Whitney in founding the Museum and is now co-executive director. “This partnership will help us make great strides as we move toward our ultimate goal of changing perceptions of mathematics.”

MoMath is located at 11 E 26th Street on the north side of popular Madison Square Park in Manhattan. The Museum is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. For more information, visit momath.org.
