NATIONAL MUSEUM OF MATHEMATICS
AND TIME WARNER CABLE
LAUNCH FAMILY FRIDAYS PARTNERSHIP
TO PROVIDE ENGAGING MATHEMATICAL PROGRAMMING
TO LOW-INCOME FAMILIES

First Time Warner Cable Family Fridays at MoMath to be held April 11

New York, NY (April 7, 2014): The National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) and Time Warner Cable announce a new partnership aimed at providing free mathematical opportunities to low-income families. Held monthly, Time Warner Cable Family Fridays at MoMath invites children and families to join mathematical innovators from around the country to experience the fun and engaging aspects of math. The first event in the series, entitled Mathemagic with a Deck of Cards, will be held on Friday, April 11 at 6:30 p.m.

“Through Time Warner Cable’s signature Connect a Million Minds initiative we are proud to partner with The National Museum of Mathematics to make fun math programs available to so many kids in the area,” said John Quigley, regional vice president of operations, Time Warner Cable. “This is yet another way in which Connect a Million Minds is showing kids that science, technology, engineering and math can be fun by introducing them to exciting, informal learning opportunities outside the classroom.”

Led by mathematician Colm Mulcahy, Mathemagic with a Deck of Cards will present a sampling of mathematical card tricks, both recent and classical, that draws from ideas in algebra, discrete mathematics, and probability. Over the past decade, Dr. Mulcahy, a professor of mathematics at Spelman College in Atlanta, has been at the forefront of publishing new mathemagical principles and effects for cards. His puzzles and card tricks have been featured in the New York Times, and he pens the long-running bi-monthly Card Colm for the MAA. Join him for an evening of mathemagical fun and learning material sure to impress mathematics classes and friends alike.

“Innovative programming is at the heart of MoMath’s mission to make math engaging and fun for families and children of all ages. We are excited to announce our new partnership with Time Warner Cable and look forward to bringing the love of mathematics to an even broader audience,” said Glen Whitney, MoMath co-founder and co-executive director.

“When we set out to create the only math museum in North America, we wanted to create a space where visitors could discover the many surprising aspects of mathematics that rarely make it into the classroom setting,” said Cindy Lawrence, who joined Whitney in founding the Museum and now serves as co-executive director. “Time Warner Cable Family Fridays at MoMath will reveal these exciting aspects and help us move toward our ultimate goal of changing perceptions of mathematics.”

In May, Time Warner Cable Family Fridays at MoMath will feature a presentation from Yale professor Nathan Kaplan that will explore interesting strategies and investigate fascinating unsolved problems related to Tic-Tac-Toe.
