Free Play: A Free Afternoon at North America’s Only Math Museum
Thursday, January 29, from 2 – 7 p.m.

New York, NY (January 13, 2015): The National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) and Citadel proudly announce Free Play, a new partnership providing the first-ever free afternoon at the only math museum in North America. On Thursday, January 29, admission to MoMath will be completely free for all visitors from 2 – 7 p.m.

MoMath strives to fulfill the incredible demand for hands-on math programming with exhibits and programs that stimulate inquiry, spark curiosity and reveal the wonders of math to all who visit. Since its opening in December 2012, MoMath has attracted over 300,000 visitors, shattering attendance projections.

“MoMath is thrilled to partner with Citadel to continue bringing cutting-edge exhibits and diverse programming to New York City’s visitors and residents,” said Glen Whitney, MoMath president. “We are delighted to work with a company that truly values mathematics and look forward to bringing the love of math to an even broader audience.”

Among MoMath’s most popular exhibits are Robot Swarm, where visitors can interact with dozens of small, glowing robots and learn about the mathematical principle of emergent behavior; the Square-Wheeled Trike, which uses a track of catenary curves to show how square wheels can roll smoothly; and Math Square, an interactive display-screen floor where visitors make their way through mazes and interact with logic games.

“When we set out to establish the only math museum in North America, we wanted to create a space where visitors could discover the many surprising aspects of mathematics that are often overlooked by popular culture,” said Cindy Lawrence, MoMath executive director. “Through Free Play, we hope to expand our audience and make great strides toward our ultimate goal of changing perceptions of mathematics.”

MoMath is located at 11 E 26 St on the north side of popular Madison Square Park in Manhattan. The Museum is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. For more information, visit momath.org
